This Week in Canton History

The chips will be on the table Friday night when the Canton Eagles run out on Memorial Field in Terrell to play the powerhouse Tigers with a share of the district crown as the prize. The Eagles will be meeting an experienced but light 11 when they meet the favored Terrell team. When the season opened, 16 letterman, 12 starters greeted the whistle.

Terrell’s season record is 7-1-1 while the Eagles have a 7-2 win and loss record. The Tigers are undefeated in district play while Canton has lost one game.

If the Eagles defeat Terrell Friday night, District 13 AA will be thrown into a three-way tie with Canton, Van, and Terrell sharing in the loot. This is true, provided the Vandals whip Grand Saline.

Terrell sports a fine backfield, an excellent line with free substitutions used in both. They are capable of wearing the Eagles down with their depth in both places. Indications point to a good, hard-fought contest between the 2 teams. The Eagles know that they need this game, and the Tigers are determined to keep them from a win.

Mrs. Bertie Lee Burrows, 62, a native of Canton, died at Mesquite Sunday night at the home of her daughter after a long illness. She was a member of the Baptist Church. She had been living with her daughter in Mesquite since she became ill.

Funeral services were held at Eubank Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Clayton Cheney and Rev. Sam Purkheir officiating. Interment was in the Haven of Memories Memorial Park.

THIS and THAT-Delton Yarborough of Grand Saline has been named jailer by Sheriff J. W. Burnett in place of Jordan Morris who recently resigned. Mr. and Mrs. Morris have moved back to Edom.

Much is being said about fallout and the effect it will have on foods…From the U. S. Department of Agriculture at Beltsville, MD. “Only one per cent of the radioactive material present on grazing crops will show up in milk. In addition a new method has been discovered whereby 98% of the remaining radio-active material in milk can be removed.”

Test are being continued with the hope of developing a new process for removing strontium 90 which can be operated continuously and economically in milk plants.

The game between the Grand Saline Indians and the Van Vandals should be a fight to the finish… The Vandals have too much finesse for the Indians so we will string along with the Van club… It will be close however, in this grudge game.
