Eaglettes top Lady Cats in first district contest, 58-26
The Canton Eaglettes passed their first District 13-4A test of the 2017-’18 season with flying colors, getting all the points they would need in the first half of a 58-28 win over the visiting Rains Lady Cats Jan. 5.
Canton, red-hot all season long, made short work of the Lady Cats Friday night by taking a 14-4 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter would provide more of the same as the Eaglette defense continued to hold the Lady Cats at bay helping guide Canton to a 35-9 lead entering the half.
With the game well in hand, the Eaglettes coasted down the stretch, playing the Lady Cats to an 8-8 tie in the third quarter before another late surge resulted in the Eaglettes outscoring Rains 15-11 in the fourth quarter for a 30-point win.
Canton’s stingy defensive effort included limiting the Lady Cats to just four players in the stat book with points.
The Eaglettes were led offensively by Kayden Prox with 12, Ashley Wood with 10, Hannah Manry with eight, Rachel Cade and Olivia Norrell with seven each, Kenley Nixon with six, Hannah Welty and Larissa Holloway with three each and Mattie Tullos with two.
Standings after one night of District 13-4A action includes Canton, Van and Mabank all tied for first at 1-0 and Wills Point, Brownsboro and Rains all tied for fourth at 0-1.
The Eaglettes will look to tighten their grip on a playoff spot this week with a game at home against Mabank Jan. 9 and a trip to Van Jan. 12. Other upcoming contests for Canton are set to include a home date against the Brownsboro Bearettes Jan. 16 and a trip to Wills Point Jan. 19 to wrap up the first round of district play.
