While researching the newspapers from the olden days of “1962” to write the Canton History column, I came across a very memorable time for Van Zandt County. With all the Campaigning going on and all the candidates reaching out to the citizens of Van Zandt County, I thought this was an appropriate reminder of times gone by. How wonderful it would be to look back, in the years to come, to 2018 in Van Zandt County at our Primary Campaigning and have something this memorable said about our county for every year in the future.

April 19, 1962

 

Political Rally Slated For Canton Friday - An old-time political rally will be staged on the streets of Canton Friday night, April 20 by the Canton volunteer fire department. T. Dean Brown, Fire Chief, said “Representatives of state and local political offices will make speeches in behalf of their respective candidates.”

To spice up the program there will be a street dance after the rally with music being furnished by the local string band.

Brown said that concession stands will be available for people to eat and be refreshed. Fire truck rides will be furnished for the little kiddies to partake.

Merchants of Canton have extended in a cordial welcome to all to visit Canton the day of the rally. They have issued an invitation through the Herald for people to come early to take advantage of their many services. Chief Brown said that the rally will get underway at 7 p.m. Olden days didn’t He expects a large crowd since it’s the first political rally in recent years.

  1. you haven’t made your plans to attend the Candidates Rally in Canton Friday night, you had better do so… It will be like old times in Van Zandt with people (and politicians) from all over the county gathering for a rally… Speeches will be made, hotdogs will be eaten, children will play in the streets, and a street dance will be held… Come one, come all, and enjoy yourself…”Candidates please keep this in mind and let’s make this Campaign one that we will all be proud of in the future...56 years ago...
