Eagles among four county playoff qualifiers
Van Zandt County boys basketball teams will face a tall task if they hope to match the performance of the county's varsity girls basketball teams during the bi-district round playoffs after the Canton Eaglettes, Edgewood Lady Dogs, Martins Mill Lady Mustangs and Van Lady Vandals all posted double-digit wins to advance to the Area round of the playoffs.
Bi-district round matchups involving county schools will include:
-Canton: The Canton Eagles were a hardluck team throughout much of the District 13-4A calendar, narrowly falling short against some of the district's toughest teams. The Eagles turned the page late, however, winning two of their last three games to advance to the bi-district round of the playoffs for a game against District 14-4A Texarkana Pleasant Grove beginning at 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at Mt. Vernon High School.
-Edgewood: The Edgewood Bulldogs have been a team on a mission throughout the 2017-'18 season, recently completing a perfect run through District 12-3A play to improve their overall record to 29-2 entering the playoffs. Edgewood were scheduled to take on Uplift Hampton Prep beginning at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at Forney High School.
-Martins Mill: The Martins Mill Mustangs continued to show themselves to be one of the best 2A teams in the state, posting a sterling 30-3 record overall including 10-0 in district during the 2017-'18 regular season. The winners of District 14-2A were scheduled to take on the Honey Grove, the fourth seed coming out of District 13-2A, in the bi-district round of the playoffs Feb. 19 at McKinney North High School.
-Van: The Van Vandals finished District 13-4A play with an 8-2 record overall, good enough for second place behind a Brownsboro Bears team that has now won four consecutive district championships. Van was scheduled to take on Paris North Lamar at Princeton High School beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 20.
