Softball team competes at Sulphur Springs Tourney
The Canton Eaglettes varsity softball team officially opened their season last week, getting their first taste of tournament against with an appearance at the Sulphur Springs Tournament Feb. 15-16.
The Eaglettes opened play on a good note, going 2-0-1 over three games against a slate that included Mineola, Sherman and Community.
Canton opened play against Mineola Feb. 15, rallying from a late 5-4 deficit to secure an 8-5 win. Carla Autry got the start and win for the Eaglettes, allowing four earned runs and five hits over four innings. Autry helped her own cause in the contest, going 2/3 at the plate with a home run, a double and 4 RBI.
Other offensive leaders included Kylie Floyd going 2/3 with a double and two runs scored, Baylee Sanders going 2/3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Reagan Busby going 1/2 with 3 RBI and a run scored, and Brooke Arnold and Lottie Adams each going 1/3.
The Eaglettes improved to 2-0 on the season with another impressive win Feb. 15, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning of a 3-2 decision over Sherman.
Lauren Reid was stellar on the mound for Canton, striking out nine while allowing just two earned runs over six innings.
Brooke Arnold led the Eaglettes offensively, going 2/3 at the plate with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored. Baylee Sanders provided Canton with its other triple in the contest, finishing 1/3 with an RBI. Kylie Floyd finished place against Sherman going 1/2 with a stolen base and a run scored.
The Eaglettes' final outing at the tournament, Feb. 16 against Community, ended with a 4-4 tie.
Lauren Reid received the no decision for the Eaglettes on the mound, allowing one earned run over 4 1/3 innings. Reid also finished 1/2 at the plate with a run scored.
Sara Mefford helped to spark Canton's offense against Community, finishing 1/2 with a double, 2 RBI and two runs scored. Erin Martin finished 1/1 with a triple and an RBI, and Brooke Arnold finished 1/3 with a stolen base.
The Eaglettes were scheduled to host Bonham Feb. 20 before taking part in their second of three scheduled tournament appearances this season at Lindale Feb. 22-24. Other upcoming games for Canton will include a home game against Gladewater Feb. 27 and the annual Canton Tournament March 1-3.
