CANTON HERALD: May 3, 1962- The First Baptist Church of Ben Wheeler will hold a groundbreaking service. The church has been planning to build a new church building for several months. The old structure has been taken down and the church ground is about ready for the new structure to begin.
The church extends an invitation to the public to attend the service. The service will include all the members of the church and all the committees building committee, finance committee, trustees and the board of deacons.
The Van Zandt Association Missionary, Rev. Bernard Franklin will bring the morning message and then there will be a groundbreaking service in the afternoon.
Funeral services for Daniell Lee Dickerson, Junior., Infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniell Lee Dickerson, were held Wednesday, May 2, at 2P. M. In Hilliard & Sons Funeral Chapel. Rev. S. A. Hodge of Eustace officiated and interment was in the old Bethel Cemetery under direction of Hilliard & Sons Funeral Home. Survivors include his parents a brother Thomas Wayne Dickerson; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Dickerson of Mabank and Mrs. Modenna Guinn of Myrtle Springs.
Cana Baptist Church is to celebrate its centennial, July 27-29. The church needs the names and addresses of former pastors and ministers in order to be able to send them a program later when plans are completed.
Emory-Directors of the Lake Towakoni Association decided here Thursday night a proposed outboard drag race program at the lake during the summer of 1962 is “too big” for the present organization. The Sabine River Authority had given the Association 1st refusal of the program.
However the group will throw support to individuals said to be interested in staging a drag race program at the lake, the Association board indicated.
The meeting was in the dining room of the Deluxe Café in Emory. Linton Bowman president, presided at the meeting: Full cooperation with the Greenville Jaycees in staging the “Miss Towakoni” contest at Greenville was also promised by the directors. The contest preceded by a boat parade will be at held May 5. Bill Billingsley, president of the Greenville organization, and Sam Flood, vice president, each spoke briefly with regard to the “Miss Towakoni” contest and boat parade... Billingsley said three prizes will be awarded to the boat parade winner and added so for the towns of Point, Emory, Rockwall and Royce City have promised entries in the beauty pageant, and two will enter from East Texas State College.

Worth Heard, 35 a lifelong resident of the Canton area, died Friday, April 27 in a Houston hospital after an illness of almost a year. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the 1st Baptist Church of Canton with Rev. Don Brown and Rev. Louie Baron officiating. Interment was in Cox Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home, Mr. Heard was born Nov. 8, 1906, in Ben Wheeler and had lived his entire life in the East Texas area.
Ronnie Miller 10 was injured in a car mishap Tuesday afternoon ½ mile north of Myrtle Springs when he fell from a car driven by Jerry Wayne Cheney.
The youth was riding on the front fender when he fell and became tangled up with the vehicle. The accident occurred at about 6:455 P. M. Tuesday. The youth was treated in Canton and sent to a Tyler hospital immediately. His condition was not known Wednesday.
East Texas Squirrel Season Opens May 1-Tyler squirrel season officially open the East Texas area on May 1. Good weather conditions have created a plentiful food supply which has resulted in a healthy and unusual squirrel crop and hunting interest is expected.
Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Davis of Route 2, Ben Wheeler, honored their son, Jack, and his bride elect, Mrs. Roberta Gail Comer of Waco with an open house Easter Sunday. The bride elect’s colors of rose and White was used on the tables and in the flower arrangements. The wedding will be solemnized June 2 at 8 P. M. In the Herring Avenue Methodist Church in Waco, friends are invited.
W. G. (Green) Smith of Edgewood celebrated his 88th birthday Sunday, April 29, with a surprise birthday dinner at his home in Edgewood given by his children. Those present were Mrs. Myrtle Lawley of Eustace, Ernest Smith of Dallas, Robert Smith of Whitten and Mrs. Minnie Baker of Edgewood. 2 were unable to attend, they were Mrs. Ethel Turner of Dallas and Carl (Buddy) Smith of Shepherdsville, Kentucky. Mr. Smith has 18 grandchildren and 5 of them present. He also has 18 great-grandchildren and 3 were present. A large crowd of other relatives and friends attended. A bountiful lunch was spread under the trees at the noon hour. Pictures were made throughout the day. The oldest daughter shared the birthday honors also as she had her 55th birthday Saturday, April 28, They received many nice gifts.
American Diabetic Association gives hints on how to “prolong prime of life.” Although the dietitians haven’t found the fabled “fountain of youth,” they have hit upon the next best thing-strategy to prolong the prime of life.
The Association in its recent publication “Forget Birthdays, Enjoy Good Eating.” says the secret of prolonging the prime of life goes like this-
Give yourself the energy you need to keep your body functioning properly. Help yourself to have the strength to do the things that make your days pleasant.
Be considerate of yourself by trying to maintain health and resist disease through eating wisely.
Ask your doctor to guide you in making changes if he feels that your eating habits should be modified.
The Association also suggests that you bypass food fads or myths on the food front.
