Eaglettes place fourth at EW Tourney
For the second consecutive weekend, the Canton Eaglettes stayed within the confines of Van Zandt County for tournament action as the traveled to Edgewood Aug. 23 and 25 to compete against 15 other area schools at this year’s installment of the Back to School Dig-Fest.
Competing in a field that included host Edgewood, Cumberland Academy, Scurry-Rosser, Farmersville, Palestine, Grand Saline, ETCA, Troup, Boles, Hooks, Keene, Lone Oak, Fruitvale, Life Waxahachie and Carthage, the Eaglettes finished fifth overall in the Gold Bracket.
Day one of the tournament included three pool play matches for the Eaglettes including showdowns with ETCA, Troup and Grand Saline.
Canton finished 2-1 overall in pool play, scoring wins over both ETCA and Grand Saline while suffering a loss to Troup. The 15-25, 26-24, 25-23 win over the Lady Indians served as an impressive bounceback effort by the Eaglettes following a four-set loss to the same Grand Saline program just two days prior.
With their efforts during day one of the tournament, Canton advanced to the Gold Bracket alongside Troup, Keene, Carthage, Scurry-Rosser, Edgewood, Farmersville and Life Waxahachie.
Canton would open the final day at the Back to School Dig-Fest by topping tournament-host Edgewood in three sets, 25-16, 14-25, 25-16.
The win propelled the Eaglettes into a second round matchup against a talented Farmersville squad currently ranked 7th overall in the state among all 4A teams according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Farmerville would come away with the victory against Canton, scoring a 25-13, 25-12 decision over the Eaglettes.
The loss dropped Canton into the third place match and a rematch against Troup.
The Lady Tigers completed the sweep of Canton at the event, outlasting the Eaglettes 25-18, 23-25, 25-21 in a tightly contested match.
Canton was scheduled to host Kaufman Aug. 31 for a 4:30 p.m. start before hitting the road to compete against Elkhart Sept. 4.
