Louise Gober 1928-2018

Effie Louise McMinn Gober, 90, of Canton, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov. 14, 2018. She was born on May 12, 1928, to Oyer Lafayette McMinn and Mary Jane Pierot McMinn in Dallas.

She grew up in Dallas and graduated from Sunset High School in 1945. She later attended Arlington State College and studied art.

She became a Christian at the age of 12 and God has always been her guiding light. In September of 1951, Louise married Clinton Morrison Gober Jr.

She enjoyed several careers, including working at Southwestern Bell and Southern Methodist University. In 1972, the Gobers moved their family to Canton, where she volunteered with 4-H and the Girl Scouts while working as a bookkeeper at Canton Motors.

In 1979, the Gobers bought The Locker Room Pro Shop and changed the name to Gober's Athletic Shop.

She, Lisa, and later, Clinton, operated the athletic shop for 16 years. Those were some of the happiest times for her as she made lifelong friends, watched the local community children grow up, and traveled with her family on many camping trips.

In the years after closing the store, she enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Canton Home Demonstration Club. She has been a member of First Baptist Church of Canton since 1973, where she was an active leader of the Women's Missionary Union and taught for many years in Vacation Bible School and Sunday School, in addition to singing in the choir.

She began painting again when she was 80 and always enjoyed learning new things. In her later years, she spent as much time as possible with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Oyer and Mary McMinn, and her brother, Talmadge McMinn.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Clinton Gober of Canton; her brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Betty McMinn of Duncanville; her daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Walker Brewer of Seguin; her daughter, Sandy Gober of Tyler; her daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Perry Hutcherson of Canton; her grandchildren, Wendy Zurovec, Kimberly Poe, Kelly Schoenvogel, Lori Baker, and Lance Brewer, all of Seguin, and Preston Hutcherson, of Boston; her 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Pallbearers for the service included Walker Brewer, Perry Hutcherson, Lance Brewer, Preston Hutcherson, Glenn Tarpley, and John Poe.

Honorary pallbearers include C.A. Waites, Carl Zurovec, Adam Schoenvogel, Brad Baker, Eric McMinn, Curtis McMinn, Bruce McMinn, and Arthur Pierot.

Services were Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, at the Eubank Funeral Chapel with Dr. Mike Roberson and Pastor Gordon Vestal officiating.  Interment was in Haven of Memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the missions fund at First Baptist Church of Canton.
