Eaglettes to Lady Dogs 50-43 in county battle

The Canton Eaglettes and Edgewood Lady Dogs met on the hardwood Nov. 20, wrapping up their respective pre-Thanksgiving schedule in a tightly contested game. The Eaglettes would ultimately prevail in the contest, hitting 15/18 free throws down the stretch for a 50-43 win.
Canton narrowly edged out Edgewood on the scoreboard in the first quarter, getting points from five different players to take a slim 11-10 lead.
Edgewood bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring Canton 15-13 in the frame to take a one-point lead into the half.
Through two quarters of play, Katy Pool paced all Edgewood players with nine points while Olivia Norrell led all Canton players with six.
Only three players, two for Canton and one for Edgewood, managed to score any points in the third quarter as the Eaglettes evened the score at 30-30 with just eight minutes to play.
Led by scrappy defensive play from Olivia Norrell, Mattie Tullos and others, Canton was able to open up an eight point advantage midway through the fourth before pulling away late courtesy of a stellar effort at the free throw line. Ashley Wood was a key factor down the stretch, hitting all 10 of her fourth quarter attempts from the line to help Canton ice the game and keep Edgewood at bay.
Leading scorers for Canton included Ashley Wood and Olivia Norrell with 13 each, Hannah Manry with 10, Kyndall Nilius, Mattie Tullos and Sophie Welty with four each and Kayden Prox with two.
The Eaglettes were scheduled to host Grapeland Nov. 27 for their first home game of the season before traveling to Athens for tournament play Nov. 29-Dec. 1. Other upcoming games will include a home date against Grace Community Dec. 4 and a return trip to Edgewood for tournament play Dec. 6-8.
Leading scorers for Edgewood included Katy Pool with 22, Jacie Elliott with seven, Kenzie Smith with six, Tabatha Parker with four, Addi Prater with two and Riley Price and Clara Pool with one each.
Edgewood was scheduled to travel to Tyler Nov. 27 to take on Chapel Hill before participating int he Levelland Tournament Nov. 29-Dec. 1. Other upcoming dates for the Lady Dogs will include a home contest against Quinlan Ford Dec. 4 and the Edgewood Tournament Dec. 6-8.
