The Canton Eaglettes went a perfect 5-0 at the Hornet Invitational Tournament in Athens last week, outscoring opponents by an average of 18 points per game en route to the championship.
The Canton Eaglettes, ranked 8th overall among all 4A teams in the state according to the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association Weekly Rankings, continued to impress last week, going a perfect 5-0 at the Hornet Invitational Tournament to push their overall season record to 10-1 overall.
Canton was red-hot in their first game of the event, rolling to a 43-4 halftime lead over Onalaska en route to a dominating 61-17 win over the Wildcats Nov. 29.
The Eaglettes maintained their winning ways during the second game of the tournament, overcoming a slow start to down Texas High 58-38.
Canton wrapped pool play with another double-digit win to open play Nov. 30, pulling away late for a 46-33 win over Rusk.
With their 3-0 record in pool play, Canton advanced to compete in the Gold Bracket against Howe, Bullard and Ferris.
Paired against Howe Nov. 30, Canton again struggled early against a tough opponent to trail 18-12 at halftime. The third and fourth quarters would be a different story, however, as Canton found another gear to rally back for an impressive 35-25 win over the Bulldogs.
Canton's win advanced the Eagles to the championship game of the tournament against another state-ranked team, the 14th ranked Bullard Lady Panthers. The Eaglettes would dominate defensively in the first half, allowing Canton to build up a 15-8 advantage.
The Eaglettes were able to hold off a late Bullard rally in the contest, edging the Lady Panthers 29-26 to wrap up a perfect 5-0 run through the Athens Tournament.
Canton will stay close to home this weekend, participating in Edgewood's annual tournament Oct. 6-8. The Eaglettes have four games scheduled for the pool play portion of the event, taking on Longview at 9:20 a.m and Caddo Mills at 6:40 p.m. Dec. 6, North Forney at 5:20 p.m. Dec. 7, and Scurry-Rosser at 10:40 a.m. Dec. 8. Other schools taking part in the event will be host Edgewood, as well as Wills Point, Gilmer, Kaufman and Sulphur Springs.
Canton will play host to Dallas Christian Dec. 11 and Venus Dec. 14 before returning to the road to play Princeton Dec. 18 and Quinlan Ford Dec. 20.
