Offi cials discuss budget, payments

Accountability and communication were the words of the day for Van Zandt County leaders July 28, with commissioners and county auditor Kenny Edwards spending extended time talking about invoices received from various departments without the necessary purchase order numbers.

The discussion, which came near the end of the meeting, picked up where the July 14 commissioners court meeting left off. At that time, Edwards noted that his office had received several invoices for payment lacking the needed purchase order numbers.

“I just don’t know what I’m supposed to do here,” Edwards said. “I’ve got invoices over there. I added them up yesterday, and what I currently have is approximately $17,000 worth of invoices without purchase orders. I know some things don’t require purchase orders, but a lot of things do.”

Chipping in

Animal shelter provides low-cost, high-tech services

A hound dog’s baying howl could be heard echoing through the building of the Canton Animal Shelter July 25 as multiple dogs and cats were brought in to be microchipped.

With each bark from the hound, a boisterous reply was given from multiple dogs housed within the shelter.

LaDena Jones, the clinic’s ***, greeted visitors, both two and four legged as county residents took advantage of the low price of microchipping their pet.

“Hopefully we will also have some adoptions take place. That’s what we really need is for families or individuals to come and adopt a cat or dog,” said Jones. “But, when a pet gets microchipped, it means that they can be returned to their family instead of ending up in a shelter. “

Warmer, drier conditions raise fire risk

Van Zandt County has found itself in a relatively rare position during the dog days of summer so far, benefitting from unseasonably heavy rainfalls early in the year and ducking hundred degree temperatures until just recently.

With July fading into August and a steadier onslaught of the usual summer conditions for East Texas, favorable conditions for grass fires are also on the rise.

Although the county is currently not under a burn ban, Van Zandt County Fire Marshal Chuck Allen wants residents to “exercise great caution when burning.”

Vegetation is extremely dry right now, Allen said, and with the afternoon decrease in relative humidity this can lead to rapid and intense grass fires.

Missing man found dead near Ben Wheeler

On July 20, a resident of Canton filed a missing person report regarding her son, 34-year-old Shane Earld Corson.

The resident, Paulette Vick, reported that she had not heard from her son for a couple of weeks and she had contacted his friends in attempt to determine his whereabouts. She told police she was unable to locate anyone who had seen or spoken with him recently.
Vick told police her son suffered from depression.

Canton Police launched an investigation to locate Corson and check on his well being.
