While the Canton Economic Development Corporation’s sales tax revenue is up 6.25 percent year-to-date, projections based on five-year history call for the year to end just about on target, CEDC Executive Director Julie Seymore told the board last week.
The CEDC budgeted $850,000 and the projected figure is $844,023 for a variance of $5,977 or 0.7 percent, Seymore said.
The June sales tax figure (for sales made in April and reported in May) of $69,854.99 was up 6.9 percent over 2014’s June number of $65,316.18.
The CEDC receives a 1/2-cent in sales tax funding.
Workforce Training Program
The CEDC is continuing to work with Trinity Valley Community College on a workforce training program to be housed in the old CISD administration building.
“TVCC does have a CNA program developed that the can develop fairly quickly,” Seymore said. “
The Certified Nursing Assistant program still needs a clinic partner but Crestview in Wills Point has signed on to provide equipment and supplies, she said.
More research is required before an electrical technician training program can be started, Seymore said. She said a survey of student interest and industry need should be completed and then it should be determined if the program was sustainable.
