CANTON HERALD, July 21, 1949
Robert James Kellam, 17-year- old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Kellam of Colfax, was injured in a highway accident near Garden Valley Sunday morning. He is completely paralyzed and may never move again his doctors reported from a Tyler hospital. X-rays and a full examination showed Monday morning that the youthful victim received a fractured neck and severe spinal injuries when the car in which he was riding overturned about 12:40 a.m. Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Stanger of Ben Wheeler held open hours recently in observance of their 50 years of married life. The children and grandchildren attending the celebration were Miss Ruby Stanger; Mrs.
Henry Vaught; Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Jordan and daughter, Linda Beth, of Dallas; Miss Ray Stanger; Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Tarver and daughter, Charlotte and Janet, of San Diego, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Barber, Jr., and children, Bill and Sarah Jane, of Grand Saline and Laverne Stanger of Ben Wheeler.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, July 16, at 4 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Jefferson for Roy W. Hackney, father of Joe Hackney. Mr. Hackney, 64, died at 1:30 o'clock Friday morning, July 15, in a hospital at Shreveport, La. Interment was in the Jefferson cemetery. Survivors are his wife; three sons, Joe Hackney of Canton, Fred Hackney of Jefferson and Roy Hackney of Shreveport, La.; and four daughters, Mrs. Luther Mann of Henderson, Mrs. Artie Carmick of Abilene, Mrs. Irving Tollison of McLeod and Miss Mary Hackney of Jefferson.
Mrs. Willard Hudson Sides was Miss Peggy Jo Chandler before her marriage, Monday, July 4, in Tyler. Rev. W.A. Winkle performed the single ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Chandler of Tyler, former residents of Ben Wheeler, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Sides of near Canton. Mrs. Sides is a graduate of Van high school and Tyler Junior College and Mr. Sides is a Van high school graduate and a senior in A&M College. He spent two years in service, being in Paratroopers 82nd division, medical corps. After a short honeymoon the couple will make their home in Ben Wheeler until Mr. Sides resumes his studies at A&M in the fall.
Wentworth: Sympathy is extended to the bereaved family of Mrs. Lou Farrar, who passed away Friday at her daughter's home in Canton. She was the mother of Bernice Farrar of this community.
"Cradle Roll: A baby boy, named Berl David, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Loy Terry July 14. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Lake are the parents of a six pound 12 ounce girl named Caroline, born July 6 in a Seattle, Washington hospital. Mrs. Lake is the former Irene Meredith, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J.B. Meredith.
Funeral services for Lou Ellen Farrar were held last Saturday afternoon at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Interment was in the Mount Lebanon cemetery under the direction of Eubank Bros., Canton. (more on this lengthy article on microfilm)
Funeral services were held at the Edgewood Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock for Merlin Truman Mann, who passed away in a Dallas hospital on Wednesday, July 13, following an illness of several months. Turman Mann was born at Martins Mill on Sept. 12, 1910, to Mr. and Mrs. Hyma Mann. He was graduated from Munday High School and from North Texas State College, Denton. On June 7, 1940, he was married to Miss Edith Rockenbaugh of Edgewood. To this union two sons were born, Jimmy, age six and Joel, age two. (more on this lengthy article on microfilm)
