This week in Canton history...
CANTON HERALD, June 2, 1948: "Approximately 34 eighth grade graduates enjoyed an outdoor supper Friday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Sides. After supper, games of Bingo were played with Nelva Fugate, Eugene Blackwell and Leon Moorehead winning. Among the parents and teachers present were Mr. and Mrs. Truman Riley, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Woolverton, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Palmer, Mrs. Noel Marvin, Mr. and Mrs. E. Heard, Mr. and Mrs. Reb Blackwell, Mrs. S.R. Ferguson, Mr. and Mrs. Terrell Ogletree and Mr. and Mrs. Sides.
George Truett Jeter of Canton was a member of the Oklahoma A&M College 1949 graduating class. More than 1,000 students received bachelor, master and doctor degrees in ceremonies Monday, May 30. Mr. Jeter received a bachelor's degree in engineering.
Miss Betty Moseley of Ben Wheeler, Miss Earlene Anderson of Canton, and Miss Becky Scott of Board will attend the round-up at A&M College as representatives from Van Zandt county. These girls were selected by a committee composed of Mrs. P.B. Ware of Elberta and Mrs. John Windham of Red Hill.
R.B. Corley, Jr. was born in Ben Wheeler Sept. 13, 1885, and died May 24, 1949. He spent most of his life in and around Canton and Grand Saline, and will be remembered as a farmer of this vicinity. He owned a cafe in Grand Saline at the time of his death. On May 9, 1904, he was wed to Miss Jester LaGrone of Edom who survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Willie Davidson and a son, Olan Corley, of Grand Saline, his mother, Mrs. R.B. Corley of Ben Wheeler, two grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers.
Lois McLaurin, daughter of Mr. T.H. McLaurin of Canton, received her bachelor of business administration degree at commencement exercises Sunday, May 29, at North Texas State College. Almost 500 students received bachelors and master's degrees and heard Lt. Gov. Allan Shivers, speak, at 8 o'clock Sunday evening in the college's main auditorium.
On May 20 students from the Willow Springs, Myrtle Springs, Mono, Phalba and Enterprise schools were given a real treat when they took a train trip to Marshall, leaving on the Texas & Pacific train from Edgewood early in the morning and returning that evening. The group of seventy-five children of the upper grades were accompanied by Leroy Leach and Mrs. Hattie Wilburn of Willow Springs, Mrs. I.L. Elam of Mono, Mrs. Ella T. Ballard of Enterprise, Mrs. Mary Etta Westmoreland and Mrs. Brewer of Phalba. The following parents also enjoyed the excursion with the children: Mrs. Harvary Furrh, Mr. and Mrs. Marl Waggoner, Mr. and Mrs. Sutton, N.W. Munn, Glenn Stovall, Mrs. Stringer, Mr. and Mrs.
H.C. White, Mrs. Eddie Guinn, M.C. Ballard and several others. (more on this lengthy article on microfilm)
Rock Hill: The graduating class of Martins Mill made a trip to Arkansas last weekend. They were accompanied by Doloris Easley of this community who is one of the graduates.
Those visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hamby during the weekend were Mr.
and Mrs. J.L. Stout and son, Larry, of Dallas, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Anthony and son, Lon, of Fort Worth, and Mr. and Mrs. X.L. Anthony of Grandview.
Moore: S/Sgt. Samuel Touchstone of Haughton, La., who has recently returned from overseas, spent the weekend with Wanda Lawler and Mr. and Mrs. Rufo Lawler.
