This week in Canton history...
CANTON HERALD, Aug. 11, 1949:
Final funeral services for T Sgt. Clifford E. Black were held at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Carroll Church. Re-burial was in Carroll Cemetery under the direction of Eubanks Bros.
T Sgt. Black was killed in action Dec. 4, 1944, while serving as a member of the 95th Infantry division in Germany. He was 26 at the time of his death. Survivors are his father Henry M. Black of Ben Wheeler; two brothers, Willie L. Black of Tyler and Murray Black of Garden Valley and two sisters, Mrs. J. W. McClenny of Lindale and Mrs. T. T. Hines of Ben Wheeler.
On Aug. 2, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. McKenzie observed their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in Canton in 1899. Their childhood days were spent on farms in the Van Community. Mrs. McKenzie was the former Ollie Tunnell, daughter of the late J. G. Tunnell of Van. Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie are the parents of four children, E. C. McKenzie of Chicago, Ill., Grady McKenzie of Amarillo, James C. (Stacy) McKenzie of Kansas City and Mrs. George M. Hilliard of Jacksonville.
Funeral service was held for nine month old Ricky Thurston at the Starr Church with Hilliard and Sons in charge of funeral arrangements. Ricky was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Reece Thurston of Canton. He was born Oct. 29, 1948 and passed away Aug. 8, 1949.
