Council to keep tax rate steady

Citizens ask for budget funding, First Monday building to be examined

The Canton City Council held its first hearing on the tax rate Aug. 25 with no public input from citizens.

The council is proposing to keep the tax rate at $0.420332 per $100 of property valuation.

That means property owners would see no change in their tax bill if their property value stayed the same. However, the average home value in Canton increased about $1,500 during this valuation cycle, city officials said. That translates into a tax increase of about $60.

The additional property value with the same property tax rate will increase tax revenue by 3.36 percent, according to Finance Director Kim Kroha’s figures.

“This budget will raise more total property taxes than last year’s budget by $37,970 (3.36 percent) and of that amount $23,217 is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll year,” information presented to the council stated.

A second public hearing on the tax rate and the first public hearing on the budget were scheduled for Sept. 1. The budget and tax rate are set to be adopted Sept. 8.
