Tyler shop tricks out truck for 15-year-old cancer survivor
Last week, Tyler Autry thought he and his mom, Amy, were headed to Tyler for yet another doctor’s visit.
Tyler, 15, has been to the doctor a lot in the past two years. In May 2013 he was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer.
“I had been sick for about six moths and the doctor could not find out why,” Tyler said. “One day when I was really sick, I went the ER at Medical City in Dallas. They did scans to make sure it wasn’t my appendix, and they found the tumor.”
After a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Tyler is now in remission and is eagerly awaiting his 16th birthday early next month.
And what does every boy want for his 16th birthday? Wheels.
Tyler participates in FFA showing heifers. When he knew the Make-A-Wish organization was going to give him a gift, he knew just what he wanted.
“I didn’t want to go on a trip,” he said.
Instead, Tyler asked for a tricked-out, pumped-up pick-up truck. Make-A-Wish went to work.
In May, his family left his Ford F-350 with Davis-Green Paint & Body in Tyler and last week instead of the doctor’s office, Mrs. Autry drove her son to a surprise unveiling of the finished product.
