Crash involving deputy leaves one critical

A crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15 involving Van Zandt County Deputy Emily Grubbs and civilian Lena Pettiet at the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 243 in Canton.

 According to accident reports, Deputy Grubbs’ SUV "t-boned" the white 2012 Nissan sedan of Pettiet while enroute to an emergency call.

Reports indicate that the Chevy Tahoe’s  emergency lights and sirens were activated at the time of the crash, but reports also indicated that Grubbs had driven around stopped cars and was proceeding through the intersection and did not see the car driven by Pettiet.

Investigation into the crash is still underway. Pettiet sustained serious injuries and was taken by helicopter to a hospital. Her condition is still critical. She sustained multiple injuries consisting of a crushed pelvis and legs along with internal bleeding.

Since the accident, Pettiet has undergone multiple surgeries.

Grubbs was transported to a local hospital, by ambulance, for her injuries that consisted of cuts and bruises.

There were off-duty Van Zandt County officers at the scene when the crash occurred. The off-duty officers were placing campaign signs.

To aid Pettiet’s family with medical costs, CrossFit Van Zandt will be holding a blood drive noon to 6 p.m. March 14 at 988 Old Kaufman Rd

A donations box will also be available at the event, organizers said.

Big Time CrossFit, located at 1190 S. Trade Days Blvd., is selling T-shirts as a fundraiser for Pettiet. The cost is $25 and all proceeds will got to Pettiet’s family, organizers said. 1190 S Trade Days Blvd, Canton, Texas
