Fireman, deputy lead water rescue

High floods strand motorist on VZC road

With more rain predicted to last through the end of the week, Van Zandt County emergency officials are on high alert due to excessive flooding and severe weather.

Van Zandt County deputies and Constable Precinct 4 Pat Jordan were notified about a stranded motorist on Van Zandt County Road 4206 around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning March 9.

According to reports from Constable Jordan’s office, VZC Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Hollowell and South Van Zandt Volunteer Fireman Gary Corley arrived at approximately noon to discover that an elderly woman was stranded in her vehicle amid high, rushing water.

Heroes came in the form of Hollowell, who is cross commissioned with the constable’s office, is also the training captain with Edom VFD and a member of the East Van Zandt Water Rescue Team. Corley is the former Fire Chief at South Van Zandt VFD.

Hollowell and Corley deployed a mix of water rescue equipment from VZC Constable Pct. 4 and South Van Zandt VFD to wade more than 300 feet into rushing waters to rescue the stranded motorist.
