For the eighth consecutive year, members of the VZC Historical Commission received the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Historical Commission.

Budget amendments approved by commissioners

The Van Zandt County Commissioners Court didn’t let the hazy, lazy days of summer slow them down, powering through a relatively light agenda in just over 30 minutes during their regularly scheduled meeting June 28.

Highlights of the meeting included commissioners presenting members of the VZC Historical Commission with a special commendation for their efforts in the community and a series of budget amendments.

Business opened with frequent speaker Ronnie Jones addressing the court in regards to the delay in approving minutes from previous meetings.

Jones explained, “I have watched this happen time after time after time. We’re now approving minutes for May 24 which is over a month ago. When the minutes are taken, you record it and it has to be transcribed. I’ve seen it take as long as three months and I really don’t see a reason for that. I’ve asked for what happened back on the 24th and no minutes were available. At some point, I’d like to talk about what’s in that, but if you don’t ever get them up here…I know it’s not your responsibility but the court’s responsibility should be to get a hold of the county clerk’s office and tell them to give you the minutes within the next session. That gives them two weeks. They have other jobs to do and the county clerk has had medical problems, but a county does not stop because of one employee – I don’t think. Maybe I’m wrong.”

Business shifted to a public recognition item, with members of the VZC Historical Commission present being asked to come to the front of the room to receive their eighth consecutive Distinguished Service Award.
