Genealogical Society to Hear Guest Speaker Larry Turner

The monthly meeting of the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Van Zandt County Library at 317 First Monday Ln. in Canton.  

The guest speaker will be Larry Turner of Wills Point.

He will be speaking about Pearl Harbor, concentrating on the USS Arizona and four young men that graduated from Van Zandt County schools.  Dec. 7, 2016 will mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Turner is a retired teacher and coach, and currently lives in Wills Point.  He began his career as a teacher and coach in Quitman in 1964.  In 1973 he became the head football coach in Italy. Turner received his bachelor of arts from North Texas State University in 1964, his master’s from East Texas State University. In 1974 he earned an administration certification. 

After his retirement, he continued to teach half days until 2006.  The last two years he taught history and science.

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society meetings are held at 2 p.m. the fourth Saturday of each month except December at the county library.  The meetings are always open to the public and all are welcome to attend.  For more information about the Society please contact the Library of Genealogy and Local History located in the County Courthouse Annex Building in Canton at 903-567-5012.
