Looking forward to looking back
Yes, another Thanksgiving has come and gone and now we're headed for the merriment of Christmas. Before we bid adieu to turkey day, let's take a look back.
Do you have a special memory of Thanksgiving, maybe something from your childhood? I suppose we all do. Here's mine:
When I was about 12 or so, we went to central Florida where my uncle and aunt lived. I always liked my uncle very much, he was funny and made me laugh. It was only later that I learned he was a ne'er-do-well who owed everyone money, but I digress.
They lived in a small town named Kissimmee. My aunt said it was pronounced 'ka-SIM-ee' during the day and 'KISS-a-me' at night. Anyway, I went for a walk around the neighborhood while the adults argued over whether or not the turkey was done enough, and I remember all these years later how strange it looked and felt. The sky was gray, as well as the streets, and there were no trees. There were no birds or bugs making noises. It looked like what would be left after an atom bomb was dropped on it. Gray, silent, humid. About 5 years later Walt Disney bought all that land and now it's quite colorful and noisy.
I cook a delicious turkey and sensational dressing, but this year I ordered a turkey from the Edom VFD, and my dressing was a bit overcooked. I did make my very first homemade cranberry relish, but it needed a little something. First Husband is pretty easy to please when it comes to food, so he was a happy camper.
