This Week in Canton History
Feb. 16, 1961- The Canton A team girls won District, Thursday night, Feb. 9 when they defeated the Winnsboro girls. The Eagles will now play for by district. The team has played wonderfully well up to this point and it is hoped they will have good luck in their next game. High point man for Canton was Kay Douglas with 25 points, Engledow and Groves had eight each. For Winnsboro high scorer was Dean with 15 points.
The Canton B team also won Thursday night over Winnsboro. High scores for Canton were Stone with 20, Leach with 13 and Cherry with six. High point man for Winnsboro was D. Brewer with 15, next was C. Brewer with 14.
Guards for Canton have been doing a fine job keeping the other teams from scoring, they Shinn and Charlene Engledow.
Congratulations are in order for Cantonite Jackie Chaney who is serving with the Eighth United States Army…He recently received a citation for service from his Commanding General.
Funeral Services –Joe Berry Simms, First Class Sea Diver, U. S. Navy, were held at Streetman Monday, Feb 13, at the Midway Church.
Sims was born February 28, 1931. He passed away at the Naval Hospital and Corpus Christi Saturday, February 11. The Sims family were former residents of the Moore community.
Benjamin Franklin Chaney, 85, February 10 at the First Baptist Church in Canton.
