Helen Rushing 1922-2018
Services for Helen Helen Reeves McGuffey Rushing were held Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, at Hilliard Funeral Home. Burial was follow at Fairway Garden of Memories Cemetery in Van.
She was born July 9, 1922 in Mexia.
As a 7-year old child, her father moved the family to Van during the oil boom. She lived most of her life in Van. For about a year, she had been living in Lindale at Wesley House Assisted Living.
She graduated from Van High School in 1940. She attended North Texas State University and graduated from Texas A&M Commerce (ETSU) with a Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in education.
She started her teaching career in Pittsburg ISD and taught school in Van ISD for 15 years before her retirement in 1988. She was a member of Van United Methodist Church since 1933.
More than anything, she loved her family and traveling with her "partner in crime," Euline Sherbert. She ran around with the "Old Lady Chain Gang" and enjoyed her time with the "Coffee Club", which was started by her mother in the 30's. She enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks.
She passed away on Oct. 12, 2018, in Lindale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald W. Rushing; parents, Prince Edward and Maggie Elizabeth Davidson Reeves; brother, Lotis Ray Reeves; and sister, Lois Jean Wright.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons and daughter-in-law, Charles McGuffey and Hernán Morales, both of Duncanville, and Van and Patience McGuffey of Van; four grandchildren, Angela McGuffey Bott and husband, Simon of Swansea, Wales, UK, Kimberly McGuffey Hollon of Breckenridge, Colo., Brandy McGuffey of Abilene and Katy McGuffey of Van. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Alexandra Griffin, Hailey Liles, Bryce Liles, Kale Dunlap, and Connor Bott; two great-great-grandchildren, Clara and Evie Jane Griffin; many nieces and nephews; and life-long friend, Euline Sherbert.
Honorary pallbearers were Joe Hynes, Reece Kauble, Bobby Hynes, Carrol Tippett, Frank Hall, and Tommy Fugate.
