Men and Women in Service- Lackland AFB-airman 3rd class Albert A. Phillips, son of Mrs. Willie G. Aiken, Route 1, Canton is being reassigned to Whiteman AFB, Mo. for training and duty as a roads and grounds specialist. He is a 1961 graduate of Canton High School.
Pfc. Billy Westmoreland is spending the holidays at home with his wife-daughter and his parents. He is stationed in Augsburgh, Germany, with the 24th Infantry Division in the headquarters company. Westmoreland is a graduate of Canton High School and East Texas State College in Commerce.
Lt. Dan Seale of Mather Air Force Base, Sacramento, Calif., spent the Christmas holidays with his family, Mr. and Mrs. Angus Seale.

Mrs. Doris Teel reports that the local draft board office has been moved to new year-round conditioning quarters in the Elliott building next door to the office of attorney Clyde Elliott, Junior.… The new address is 210 North Buffalo St., and the board number is 124. (What is a board number? The telephone number.)
Texas now has more than 2,383,000 Scholastic (pupils between the ages of 6-17.)
CRADLE ROLL-Kerry Brent Huddle arrived January 4 at a Tyler hospital weighing 6 pounds and 11 ounces. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huddle and grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Flowers of Canton and Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Huddle of Ben Wheeler.
Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Bailey of Route 4, Canton, celebrated the 63rd anniversary of their wedding on Sunday, December 30, with all their seven children present.
Their children are Mrs. Clara Cole of Pasadena, Mrs. Lettie Lee Phillips of Houston, Mrs. Dorothy Ayres of Galena Park, Mrs. Dovie Chaney, Mrs. Rachel Fincher and Mrs. Ethel Stanberry of Canton and Forrest Bailey of Grand Saline.
The couple has 7 children, 19 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
The couple was married 63 years ago on December 31. The only deaths in their immediate family have been their second baby 61 years ago and one great grandchild eight years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. (Bill) Nichols celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary Sunday, Dec. 30. Their children, Mrs. Sam Hilliard and D. W. Nichols, honored them with an open house at their home on Highway 64.
H. P. (Buster) Davis, 44, died Monday at Colfax.
He was a native of Corinth Community and a member of the Colfax Methodist Church. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eubank Funeral Chapel. Rev. David Snowden and Rev. Harold Threatt officiated. Interment was in Colfax Cemetery.
CAMPUS CHATTER-Aquarium Interesting-the center of conversation in the lab at Canton high is the birth of 6 baby guppies in Mr. Murphey’s aquarium. These guppies were born over the holidays but now he has only two left.
The disappearance of these fish could be explained by the Angel Fish since they are carnivorous fish.
The guppy isn’t like any other fish, for it is born alive and is so small that one can hardly see it. All the fish in the aquarium are tropical fish.
TUNDRA-Mr. Mrs. Tony Etheridge are the parents of a baby girl, born Wednesday morning, Jan. 2, in a Grand Saline Hospital.
Historical Survey Committees-Over 2,500 members of the County Historical Survey Committees in 245 counties of Texas will represent County Judges on Texas History Preservation Day, January 19. This day will be proclaimed by Gov. John Conley to kickoff the years work of historical preservation and marking in the counties.
Dr. Rupert N. Richardson of Abilene, president of the TSHSC, said, “Events of the past should be recorded, marked and preserved for the present and future.”
“History is the number one tourist attraction in Texas,” he explained”. For this reason, the current programs of the TSHSC are to acquaint the citizens of Texas and tourist about the unique story of the Lone Star State.
Moisture Continues To Fall; we still continue to get moisture every week. It is welcome along with the very nice warm temperatures that has prevailed this first week of 1963.
Oats, clover and vetch has made very good growth for the last 2 weeks.
Farmers are making plans for spring and summer planting. Tomato farmers are buying their seed for planting in the “hotbeds” the last of January and early February.
Sweet potato growers and packers will be interested in knowing that a request has been sent to the Secretary of Agriculture (USDA) asking the government to start purchasing sweet potatoes. The request resulted from a meeting held in Pittsburgh during the holidays. The request was sent January 2 to state ASC headquarters, College Station.
The request was for potatoes grown in Van Zandt and other East Texas counties. It is not known when the secretary of agriculture will act on the request to buy sweet potatoes.
Now is a good time to apply poison grain for pocket gopher control. The grain is available at the Farm Bureau Office. Land owners are especially interested in the Gopher Burrow-Builder, which puts out the grain for gopher control. The Burrow Builder operates off tractors with a 3 point hitch.
A. P. Fowler of Van: “We can produce more grass per acre with Coastal than we can utilize. I think we can reach a point in production were it will be economical from a grazing standpoint.”
Norman Bateman of Canton “I’m going to try the “Pink deal” variety of tomato this year. I have heard it is a good one.”
