Twin sisters, 90, now roommates at Canton Oaks
Twin sisters Daphine Freeman and Maxine Corey have spent a lot of time together throughout their lives and at age 90, they are continuing to do so as roommates at Canton Oaks nursing home.
Daphine and Maxine were born Oct. 20, 1928, and raised in the Jackson Community before attending school in Jackson under Van Zandt Public Schools through the eighth grade.
Prior to their freshmen year in high school, they attended Canton High School where they both graduated in 1946.
Daphine, who was the salutatorian at CHS that year, got married after high school in August 1946. She has six children, 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
“I went to work at Terrell State Hospital after having my fourth child,” recalled Daphine. “I worked in Terrell for about 15 years before moving back to Mabank.”
After separating from her first husband, Daphine married Bill Freeman. The Freemans were married for 39 years before Bill passed away recently.
“When he got sick, they sent him here to Canton Oaks,” recalled Daphine. “Both of us came here on Sept. 8, 2018, to live. We did not need to stay at home. When he passed away, I decided to remain here at Canton Oaks and this is where I am going to stay.”
Her twin sister, Maxine Corey, was already a resident at Canton Oaks living across the hall from Daphine and after Daphine’s husband passed away Nov. 20, 2018, the decision was made to move Maxine in with Daphine.
