Joel Bunting of Boy Scout Troop 378 received his Eagle Scout Rank June 1 at First Baptist Canton.
His Eagle Scout project was a gaga pit for the children and youth of First Baptist Canton. Joel designed the gaga pit to be durable for outdoors but also able to be taken indoors.
“Joel supervised the building of the gaga pit with the help of volunteers from Troop 378. The church has used the gaga pit for their AWANA program and the youth group. They hope to take it on the mission trip this summer,” said Sheree Bunting.
Bobby (Gene) and Mary Montgomery of Canton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, June 2, 2017.
Their daughters, Julie Eddleman and Christi Hammonds, along with their four grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Mary and Garrett wish them Happy 50th anniversary and many more years of happiness!

The Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA) was pleased to award the City of Canton a Community Assistance Program Grant on May 18th as part of SRA’s Fiscal Year 2017 Economic Development Initiative. The $10,000 check will be used to make sure that essential water and wastewater services are sustained after the April 29th tornado disaster.
A check in the amount of $211,660.00 was presented as part of the Texas Cares Campaign to the Salvation Army for use in the recovery efforts in Van Zandt County from the April 29 tornadoes. The check was presented in the VZC Courthouse May 15.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Van Zandt County agent Melisa Rhodes recently instructed the first Master Wellness Volunteer training program.
Rhodes remarked, “the first and last classes were held in person at our office with Katie Phillips of Kaufman County Extension office assisting with instruction while the other three were online courses.” The inaugural group of Master Wellness Volunteers of Van Zandt County completed the 40 hours of training in health and nutrition, and passed the certification exam to become certified volunteers were Nancy Crim of Ben Wheeler, Bob Moore of Canton and Patsy Shaw of Martins Mill.
Kristi Ann Michels and Mark Thomas Harris were married April 22, 2017, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Indianapolis, Ind. with Fr. James Wilmoth officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Tim and Patti Michels of Edgewood. The bridegroom is the son of Tom and Jane Harris of Indianapolis.
The bride is a graduate of The University of Dallas. She is employed as a project coordinator at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Pastor Dan Tarno was presented an award for Best Pastor in Van Zandt County during Services on Sunday, April 9. Pastor Tarno is the founder of Grace Bible Fellowship in Canton. The church which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in July. He and his wife, Cendy Tarno have lived and pastored in Canton for 34 years.
