Tyler-area man running for State Board of Education

Hank Hering

Hank Hering is running in the Republican primary for State Board of Education, District 9.

Hering said after 30 years of standing for conservative principles within the Republican Party, “It is time for me to continue that endeavor on the State Board of Education.”

A software systems engineer with Brookshire Grocery Company, Hering and his wife of 33 years, Jennifer, have lived in the Tyler area for 21 years. Four of their five children hold degrees, and the fifth is a freshman in college.

Hering said the principles and policies of America’s founders, based on strong Judeo-Christian footing, must be passed on to our children and grandchildren in order to safeguard the nation.

“We cannot ignore that this purposeful undertaking is highly influenced by our education system, nor that this process must be diligently monitored with wisdom and common sense,” he said.

“A bus can be replaced; a child’s life cannot be,” was the motto of Larry Thornton’s safety training course given to Canton Independent School District bus drivers Feb. 3.

Thornton said he had been a part of the school bus training initiative for the Region 6 Education Service for a number of years and offered a virtual and hands on course to improve the reaction time of school bus drivers.

Canton ISD Transportation Director Dawn Lofton said she was excited to see the program come to Canton.

“We have waited a number of years for this program to finally come to us. We are so excited about what this might mean to our parents whose children ride the school bus every day,” said Lofton.

Colfax UMC hosting blood drive Saturday

Carter BloodCare reports that 75 percent of blood donors give once a year at the local community blood center.

The Center is now asking its volunteer donors to consider making at least one more donation. That would make a significant contribution to the available blood supply, BloodCare officials said.

According to information from the center, “without consistent donations coming in, there is no way to provide blood transfusions to hospital patients in the community because there is no substitute for human blood. More than 1,000 blood donors a day are required to keep up with regional hospital demands. Adding to the formula is the fact that the blood available must be of the right blood type and the correct blood product, at the right time.”

Colfax United Methodist Church in Canton is hosting a blood drive from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 13. The Carter BloodCare bus will be on the parking lot of the church, located at 3739 FM 16.
