* Don't throw toads out of your garden! There's hardly a better pest-control method than these good old-fashioned bug eaters. Toads can eat hundreds of bugs a week, and they don't cost a dime. They are a gardener's good luck!
* "How to never have cloudy ice tea: Brew tea bags in hot water; steep for 4-5 minutes and remove bags to cool. Mix to taste with room temperature water and let the whole business cool down before you put it in the fridge." -- J.G. in Alabama
* To clean your car's cup holders, use this sneaky trick: "Find a large cup that just fits inside the holder. Slip it down inside a sock, and then spray the bottom of the sock with all-purpose cleaner. When you put the sock-covered cup in the cup holder, it can get down in there and scrub off the gunk." -- R.E. in Texas
I read recently that no music ever moves us like the tunes we encounter in our teenage years – for me, those tunes were by the Bee Gees, Aerosmith, and Willie Nelson. Yes, I realize that is a crazy combination. Also included: the Carpenters and AC/DC. But my musical background was very confused.
Every New Year we set goals. Dreams about winning the lottery, hitting it big in the stock market and losing weight on a new diet are the typical thoughts.
Beginning with the end in mind is one of the functions of the brain. Brain experts sell lots of books about the imagination. Movies and amusement parks are in the “pretend like” business.
Vera, Texas- If you’ve never visited the “Cedar Breaks” county of north Texas up in Knox County, you have missed some of the most spectacular views that Texas has to offer; also some of the best hunting! I first discovered this area while on a deer hunt at Ranger Creek Ranch a couple of decades ago and since this first visit, I find myself drawn like metal shavings to a magnet to this awesomely rugged country that is rich in game and history.

As a writer, I do a lot of reading. It comes with the gig, really. Whether it be research, news, or just a dog-eared paperback, words are addictive. One of my favorite subjects is old school gangland stories. It’s probably the exaggerated romance of it all, but there was something about the depression area gangsters, in their tweed suits and trench coats with their fedora pulled down “just so.” Names like Lucky Luciano, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly and Bugsy Seigel; glamorous, stylish, defiant; blown into pulp fiction by the press and dime store novels, with James Cagney in “White Heat” screaming from the top of a burning building, “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!”
We do love our entertainment.
It’s easy to look past the facts, though. These people were cold blooded murderers. Not really something to be romanticized or worshiped in the cult of personality. They were the worst among us.
My “Get Healthy Journey” started June 12, 2006. Northeast Texas has become the health and wellness center of Texas.
Old people fall, and it is a major cause of death. I fell Jan. 17, 2006. If my fall had not happened in Canton, I would not be here writing to you because dead people don’t write.
In the old days before we had cars, farmers were warned to not put the cart before the horse. Slick salesmen were selling gullible farmers fancy carts that the horses could not pull.
History repeats itself. Today, slick diet salesmen are making a fortune on gullible hefty folks who want to lose weight. Television stations are loaded with the ads. The talk shows have famous folks talking about the power of the magnificent weight loss power of the products they are promoting.
