Winners of prizes that include $50 cash, Legos and tickets to Splash Kingdom at Summer Reading at VZC Library were Dawson Davis- Legos; Jacob Baker, Splash Kingdom,
tickets; and other prizes went to Ty Reed, Landon Baker, Brady Moyne, Amaylli Golan, Austin Corbett, Katherine Ann Haskins and Bobby Mazingo.

Children that attend five of the seven sessions will have a chance to win the grand prize of either a Lego City or an American Girl Doll, librarians said.

Blakemore speaks to Lions

Lion Cindy Malouf introduced Canton Herald Publisher Brad Blakemore at last week’s Lions Club meeting. Blakemore, who also serves on the chamber of commerce, introduced the club to a new program offered by the Chamber entitled “Leadership Van Zandt County,” a 10-month program with a variety of classes.

Colacino explains Global Youth to Lions

May 25, Lion Bobby Colacino gave an informative program to the Lions Club. He talked about how Van Zandt County Juvenile Probation Department’s participation in Global Youth Service Day. The group worked in conjunction with Van Zandt County Extension Office, Canton Police Department, Van Zandt County CSCD and the Lions Club. These projects involved 22 youth with more than150 hours of community service.

Blues finalist

Derian Hadley, a student at Canton High School, has been picked as a finalist in the Junior Showcase Competition at the 11th Annual T-Bone Walker Blues Festival to be held at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview June 4.  Derian is the son of Jennifer Hadley and the grandson of Betty Hadley, both of Canton.

The couple was married June 4, 1966, in Eustace.

Van Zandt County graduates Master Gardener class

The latest class of the Free State Master Gardeners included, from left, Jennifer Lay, John Clark, Karen Gonzales, Heidi Stone, Kathy Massey, Susan Dahlman, Connie Tramel and Jimmie Pierce.

May 12, eight individuals graduated the Van Zandt County Master Gardener training to become Texas Master Gardener interns. 

These eight individuals completed the mandatory 50 hours of instruction. They will now give back 50 hours of volunteer time to earn the title of Texas Master Gardener. 

This was the fourth master gardener class for Van Zandt county.

These individuals will contribute to the growing Free State Master Gardener program which is now 42 members strong, according to VZC AgriLife Extension Agent Tommy Phillips.

“For those of you that would be interested in becoming a Texas Master Gardener, this program is for you,” Phillips said. “Our fifth class will start in January 2017.”

The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon each Wednesday Jan. 11 through April 19, 2017.

Storytime fun, summer times

There was a special guest at the Van Zandt County Library during Storytime May 20. 

Matt Porter came and played the guitar and led the children in singing.  The songs included “Bingo,”  “Old MacDonald” and “The Hokey Pokey” which had all the children giggling. 

Ms. Rhonda read Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses.  Pete is a real favorite of the younger set at the library.  The craft of the day was a sunshine magnet.  

Preschool Storytime will be moving to 10 a.m. Tuesday for the summer beginning June 7.  

The next “Dog Days at the Library” will be at 4 p.m. June 8 and the summer reading programs for the 12 and under group begin at 10 a.m. Friday, June 10.

Scouts, DAR explain flag retirement procedure

Boy Scout #278 were the guests of the VZC Veterans Memorial and the NSDAR.

May12, the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial and the local Neches River Chapter of the NSDAR hosted Boy Scout Troop #378 to demonstrate how a worn, used flag is prepared for retirement.

The DAR began with a prayer and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Assistant Scoutmaster Kevin Bradway and Scouts Jeremiah Bradway and Dalton Marrow began the ceremony.

Dalton had just been advanced to a Boy Scout May 6.

They showed how each colored stripe and the blue field containing the stars are cut a part separately, rolled and stored until the time for the final step of the ritual ceremony is completed with the flag being burned. 

The symbolism of the colors was also explained.

Henley reads at Storytime

The Van Zandt County Library had a guest reader for Storytime May 13.  Author LeDann Henley came and read her book “Shimmy-Shimmy Shamrock and the Legend of the Leaves.”  The children then made a shamrock craft.
