This week in Canton History...

July 20, 1961

Official announcement was made Tuesday of the purchase of L & W Chevrolet Company of Canton to Mark Culwell, formerly of Corsicana. The sale of the Chevrolet firm was effective July 15 and Mr. Culwell assumed active management at that date.

The new owner told the press that the personnel now employed with the firm will remain under the change.

CISD proposes same tax rate, prepares for new year

School to begin Aug. 21

The Canton ISD Board of Trustees met Monday, July 17 to finalize preparations for the upcoming 2017-’18 school year.

Superintendent Jay Tullos remarked that projects around district campuses were wrapping up and near completion in anticipation of the first day of school set for Aug. 21.

According to Supt. Tullos, “painting has been completed in the high school gymnasium and in the classrooms at Canton Intermediate. Hallways were also painted and are near completion. Parking lots around the district have also received new striping. On July 5, Graffix was onsite at the high school painting the eagle in the high school gym.”

Gov. Abbott announces rifle-resistant body armor grant

AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Office of the Governor’s Criminal Justice Division (CJD) is now accepting grant applications from law enforcement agencies seeking assistance for the purchase of rifle-resistant body armor. During the 85th Legislative Session, Governor Abbott signed Senate Bill 12, which funds the $25 million statewide grant program designed to provide personal body armor to law enforcement officers across Texas. Today’s announcement comes on the one-year anniversary of the deadly ambush on Dallas police officers.

Campmeeting set in Canton

The 20th Annual East Texas Baptist Campmeeting Revival, presented by Edgewood Evangelist Dennis Erwin, will be held July 17-21 at the Civic Center in Canton.

The non-profit meeting is free and open to the public. Services begin at 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with special events daily, including a golf tournament, picnic and other special events.

The Wednesday morning service from 9:30-noon will feature sermons from young preachers and a revival sermon by Dr. Russell Rogers.  A gospel concert will be presented in each service by nationally known southern gospel and Bluegrass groups.

Looking Back

Tornado takes heavy toll of life, property in 1919

Editor’s Note: The following was an article published in the April 11, 1919, Canton Herald regarding a tornado that went through Van Zandt County. The path of the tornado was similar to that of the April 29, 2017, tornadoes.

A destructive storm passed about five miles south of Canton around 4 a.m. Wednesday resulting in a number of deaths and damaging residences and property.

At press time, the number of fatalities reached 10 in Van Zandt County and the number may continue to rise.

The tornado entered the county near the southwest corner passing about three miles northwest of Eustace and then moved entirely through the county in a northeasterly direction before leaving the county a few miles southeast of Grand Saline.

Sistrunk named Explore contest winner

With over 100 entries submitted in the Van Zandt Newspapers Explore cover contest, DeAnna Sistrunk was named the Explore 2017 cover contest winner.

Sistrunk’s photo depicts a peaceful setting over a pond in Myrtle Springs in Van Zandt County.

The contest attracted a wide variety of photographs, from roadrunners catching a frog to serene landscapes.

The winning cover was chosen for its contrast in colors and lighting, the negative space available for use, quality of the photograph and the location of the photo.

Runners up were John Haverly with his submission of a windmill at sunset and Ricky Niell with a submission of cattle on his farm.

Fatal crash claims lives of mother, son

On July 7, 2017 at approximately 9:53 p.m., Troopers responded to a three-vehicle fatal crash on IH-20 in Van Zandt County near the city of Van. Preliminary crash investigations revealed that a 2014 Ford F-350 was traveling east on IH-20 when it struck the back of a 2004 Ford Taurus that was also east bound. The impact caused the Taurus to crash into the back of a 2007 Audi.

The driver of the Ford F-350 was identified as 48 year-old Terry Donte Rose of Garland. Rose was not injured.

Council talks First Monday construction

The Canton City Council discussed approving a building to be constructed on Row I of First Monday Grounds June 20. Assistant City Manager Andy Wolfe said the city was approached by a First Monday vendor who wanted to build a building at the end of Row I.

Senior Box Program set

Manna is participating in the Senior Box Program through East Texas Food Bank.  Applicants must be 60 years old and qualify by gross income guidelines. 

“If you are on Medicaid or Food Stamps you automatically qualify.  We must see proof of age and income.  You must apply for this program and you may do so at Manna,” said organizers.

For questions about the program, call 903-567-6107.  Manna is open the third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.

Celebrating Independence

The streets of downtown Canton were filled to the brim July 4 during the annual July 4th celebration. The parade featured a long line of participants decked out in red, white and blue to celebrate Independence Day. Rosemary Redford waved to the crowds while dressed in patriotic fashion during the parade.
