Eagles finish district as third seed with loss to Lincoln

Receiver Zach Brown finished with one of Canton’s two touchdowns on senior night.

The Canton Eagles and Dallas Lincoln Tigers each had similar aspirations entering play Nov. 4, carrying identical 3-1 records into the district finale with the knowledge that the winning team enters the playoffs as the second seed coming out of District 6-4A, and the losing team enters the playoffs as the third seed.

After a back and forth first quarter that saw both offenses strike with big plays, Lincoln managed to get the better of Canton by scoring the game’s final 42 points in a 56-14 win over the Eagles on senior night.

After trading possessions to open the game, Lincoln drew first blood in the matchup by keeping a drive alive with a key fourth down play conversion, and then scoring on a two-yard Keiontay Coleman keeper. Coleman added the two-point conversion, giving the Tigers an 8-0 lead with 4:08 to play in the quarter.

Under the direction of Coach Marta Morgan, the Canton Eaglette cross country team qualified for the State Cross Country Meet. Team members include: Darby Pruitt, Morgan Palmer, Juliana Bratcher, Taylor Marshall, Claire Boyd, Kristin Neystel and, not pictured, Karen James.

The Canton cross country program will be well represented at the State Meet in Round Rock Nov. 12, qualifying the entire varsity girls team and an additional runner in the boys classification at the Regional Meet held Oct. 29 in Grand Prairie.

The varsity girls team finished third overall at the Regional Cross Country Meet led by individual runner-up Karen James in a time of 11:39. Teammate Juliana Bratcher was close behind, finishing in fifth with a time of 11:56, followed by Taylor Marshall in 12:47, Darby Pruitt in 12:47, Claire Boyd in 13:15, Kristin Neystel in 13:56, and Morgan Palmer in 14:21.

This trip to Round Rock will be the first for the Lady Running Eagles since 2000.

Cordale Harrison will also be competing at the State Meet after finishing 22nd overall with a time of 17:29 in the varsity boys division.

Canton clinches playoff spot, stays in chase for second seed

Hunter Moore had a hand in all six Canton touchdowns during play against the Emory Rains Wildcats Oct. 28.

Over the past 15 years, much of the talk about Texas high school football has centered on the proliferation of spread based, pass heavy offenses that makes Friday night contests more closely resemble a 7 on 7 game instead of traditional 11-man football.

While that may still be the case for many schools, one look at Canton’s 2016 schedule shows that the pendulum could well be beginning to swing back the other direction.

The Eagles entered play Oct. 28 against a run-heavy Emory Rains team having already crossed paths with similar offenses in Brownsboro, Mabank, Life Waxahachie, North Lamar and Ferris.

With plenty of experience already in tow, Canton did well to fend off a stiff Wildcat challenge on Friday to earn a 40-29 road win, improve to 7-2 on the season (including 3-1 overall in District 6-4A play), and secure a spot in the playoffs.

Eaglettes drop matches to Rains, Brownsboro

The Canton Eaglettes hit a pair of roadblocks on their way through district play last week, falling short in matches to both the Emory Rains Lady Cats and Brownsboro Bearettes volleyball teams.

Canton opened the week at home, hosting an Emory Rains squad currently ranked fifth overall among all 4A teams in the state in the most recent Texas Girls Coaches Association Weekly Rankings.

The Lady Cats played one of their most efficient matches of the season, sweeping Canton in three sets. Rains set the tone early, jumping in front of the Eaglettes 25-13 in the first set.

Play continued to favor the visitors throughout the rest of the night, with Rains taking the second set 25-12 before closing play by winning the third set 25-9.

The Eaglettes traveled to Brownsboro Oct. 21, looking to get back on track with a win over a Bearette team they defeated in straight sets back on Oct. 4: 25-23, 25-21, 25-17.

Eagles close in on playoff berth with 43-2 win

Dallas Roosevelt has seemingly been a magic tonic for fellow District 6-4 teams this season, having allowed opponents to score their biggest wins of the season, by margin of victory, in each of the past two games entering play against Canton.

In the district opener Oct. 7, a struggling Wills Point offense that had scored 20 points in a game just once this entire season lit up the scoreboard for 20 points in both the first and second quarters of a 53-8 rout of the Mustangs.

Dallas Lincoln followed a similar blueprint to success just a week later, pulling ahead 50-0 at halftime in what would turn into a 64-0 drubbing of Roosevelt.

Canton took its turn at the plate Oct. 21 by bouncing back from only their second defeat all season, a 32-29 district loss at the hands of the Wills Point Tigers, by hammering Roosevelt 43-2 and extending the Mustang woes by another week.

The 8th grade B team started out strong with five consecutive serves by Natali Sweat. Despite their efforts and great teamwork, the Eaglettes lost 16-25, 17-22.

In the 7th grade, the A team won the first game 25-16 and was led by Peyton Berhend who had eight consecutives serves. However, Canton had trouble with serve receive in next two games and lost 16-25, 15-25.

The 7th grade B team split games 25-14, 17-20. Rocky Collier was top server with eight serves in the first game.

The Eaglettes were scheduled to play their next district match against Emory Rains Oct. 17.
