The Canton High School boys golf team competed in the 4A State Golf Tournament for the third year in a row this past May 22-23. This year's competition was held at the Horseshoe Bay Resort - Apple Rock Golf Course in Marble Falls.
The Canton Eagle Boys golf team represented Region 2 as Champions and were paired with other Region Champions: Monahans, Waco Robinson and Fredericksburg for round one.
The Canton Eagles were a force to be reckoned with on the diamond during the 2017 season, sweeping their way through District 13-4A play with a perfect 10-0 record before adding bi-district and Area round titles in recent weeks.
Canton’s dream season officially drew to a close May 18-19 in the Regional Quarterfinal round of the playoffs as the Eagles fell in each of the first two games of a best-of-three series against perennial baseball power Texarkana Pleasant Grove.
With the 2017 season officially in the books for all District 13-4A baseball teams, coaches released their list of Superlative and All-District honorees.
Not surprisingly, Canton, which won first place overall with a perfect 10-0 record, dominated Superlative recognitions. The Eagles nearly ran the table in Superlative recognitions, winning at least a share of five out of six honors.
Van, which won four out of its final five district game to qualify for the playoffs, earned a share of one Superlative honor and a First Team All-District nod.
Canton High School hosted its annual athletic banquet May 16, recognizing student-athletes that participated in archery, athletic training, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross country, fishing, football, golf, powerlifting, softball, tennis, track and volleyball during the 2016-’17 school year.
Basketball standout Courtney Roberts became the sixth Canton High School student-athlete to sign a letter of intent to compete collegiately since May 3. Roberts will be playing at East Texas Baptist University.
Matthew Allen, a key part of Canton’s State qualifying boys golf team, signed his letter of intent to compete in golf collegiately during a special ceremony May 10.
Simon Miller picked up the save during Canton’s Area round win over Bullard May 12, registering a strikeout and inducing a game-ending double play.

The Canton Eagles continued to show how resilient they can be, bouncing back from a less than stellar defensive night that included five errors to defeat Bullard 4-3 in Area round play May 12.
Playing at Mike Carter Field in Tyler, the Panthers took advantage of an untimely Eagle fielding error to score two runs in the top of the third inning.
Canton would draw even in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs with two outs to tie the score at 2-2. The inning began with two quick outs before Simon Miller, Hunter Moore and Johnnie Krawietz all drew walks to load the bases. Tyler Massey proceeded to deliver a single on the first pitch of his at bat, bringing in Simon Miller and courtesy runner Colbey Johnson.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the sixth when Canton would proceed to score the eventual winning run in the contest. After two outs to start the inning, Johnnie Krawietz reached via an error on a sharply hit grounder to short.
The city of Canton hosted the Little Dribblers National Tournament April 19-22 where the Canton All-Star Major Boys (5th and 6th grade) were crowned the National Champions April 22 after defeating the Center Major Boys by a score of 48-37.
Canton won their first game against Bullard 31-19, followed by a hard-fought overtime loss to Mexia in the second round of the tournament.
