Thirteen children braved the rainy weather to go to Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library Oct. 23.
The theme for this week was “llama llama.”
Each child went home with a llama made using the letter “L” as part of its body. One of the books read “Is Your Mama a Llama?” that featured a baby llama asking its friends if their mama was a llama.
Next week’s the theme is Halloween.
“Storytime participants are invited to come hear a story and wear a costume. The library staff and Ms. Rhonda will also be dressed in holiday costumes,” said organizers.
Canton Rotary Club President Karen Paul thanked Tracy Ebarb for his program on "Pure Water For The World" presented to the club last week. Making pure water available to people in Honduras and Haiti has been a project shared by Rotarians since 1994.

The Arp Garden Club was welcomed to the Blackwell House Museum Wednesday Oct. 14, 2015, by Canton’s Iris Garden Club.
After a tour of the historic Blackwell House and its grounds, including the newly erected gazebo, the visitors were escorted to Canton’s Hillcrest Cemetery where they learned of the importance of the support of the Iris Garden Club which formed in 1934 for the purpose of beautifying Canton.
Hillcrest Cemetery, then known as the Canton City Cemetery, was 95 years old and the garden club members began their project of making Canton attractive by adopting the cemetery as a focus of their endeavors by installing a roadway and landscaping the area.
The Canton Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome Bella Salon into its membership. The hair care company is located at 143 W. Dallas St. Cutting the ribbon were owner/stylist Crissy Opitz and hair and makeup artist Aly Dempsey.

Children listened to bedtime stories at Storytime at Van Zandt Library.
The Storytime theme for Oct. 16 was “It’s bedtime.” Twenty- five children enjoyed hearing “Goodnight You,” “Goodnight Sleep Tight” and “Sheep, Sheep, Sheep, Help me Fall Asleep.”
The Texas Association of Business gave State Rep. Dan Flynn the TAB's Champion for Free Enterprise Award for his efforts in the 84th Legislative Session.
This is TAB's highest legislative distinction.

Garland Brandon celebrated his 95th birthday
last week with a party at Colfax United Methodist
Church.
Garland Brandon recently celebrated his 95th birthday with a gathering at Colfax United Methodist Church Sept. 27.
The theme of the party was “Happy Cotton-Pickin’ Birthday!”
Several party-attendees brought items from their days picking cotton including sacks, scales, ledgers from old gins, cotton bolls, hooks for bales and photos.
Mr. Brandon’s birthday cake was adorned with a mule “like he would have used to work the fields,” said his niece Patricia Zylks of Portland.
While Zylks wasn’t sure if Mr. Brandon was the oldest member of the family, but, she said, she was sure the youngest family member is 7-months old and Mr. Brandon is the oldest member of Colfax UMC.
C.A. and Ann Waites will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at Odd Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church Canton. Hosts are family members.
The groom is the son of Gus and Emory Waites and the bride is the daughter of Elisha and Ollie Edwards. They were married on Oct. 13, 1945, in Myrtle Springs by Bro. Duvon Stuckey at their pastor’s home.
They moved to Dallas in 1949 and returned to Canton in 1972 where they continue to live on their family farm.
C.A. retired after 38 years at Dallas ISD. Ann worked a variety of jobs and retired when C.A. did.
C.A. and Ann are faithful members of First Baptist Church Canton where he has served as a deacon and she taught Sunday School for many years.
After retirement, they helped with church construction/remodeling via the Texas Baptist Men and also traveled to do mission work.
