Everett speaks to Guild

Mathea Guild met Sept. 10 at the home of Ann Russell. There were 25 members and five guests attending the meeting.  

Before the meeting refreshments were served by Nancy Buchanan and Barbra Sininger.

Rose Dearman, president, welcomed everyone and introduced speaker Lou Ann Everett, Mayor of the City of Canton.

Everett updated the Mathea Guild on things happening and plans for in and around the City of Canton.

Mathea Guild meetings are held the second Thursday of each month beginning in September and ending in May.

Martha Guild has kept the same motto “to learn in any matter” since it was organized Jan. 15, 1985. 

More information regarding meetings will be published each month.  Visitors are always welcome, members said.

Author talks to seniors about books, life

Author and motivational speaker Herb Marlow addresses residents of Country Place Senior Living – Pine during the group’s monthly book program sponsored by the Van Zandt County Library.

Local author Herb Marlow met with residents of Country Place Senior Living – Pine last week to talk about his books.

According to information from CP-Pine Activity Director Tammy Lenamond, “the acclaimed writer, educator and counselor offers a rich series of historical and adventure novels that are destined to become classics for readers of all ages. These timeless treasures spark the imagination and remove the mystery from history as readers interact with captivating characters and creatures.”

Marlow has been featured on TV, radio and in print publications nationwide and is an established authority on childhood issues, a motivational speaker for children and adults, a retired minister, a professional counselor, an author  and a rancher.

DKG begins new year

The ladies of Beta Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma were welcomed to the first meeting of the school year by President Betty Wilson. 

New member Angel Shoquist, a third grade teacher in Van, was initiated into the chapter. 

Grace Lamar gave legislative highlights and handed out schedule of events. Cindy Rakestraw, Patience McGuffey and Betty Wilson, the members that attended the State Convention in San Antonio, gave the Convention Report. 

Twenty-one members were present in the Buchanan Room of the Van Zandt County Library. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month in the Buchanan Room. 

The next meeting will be Oct. 13 and the program will be “Beta Omega and Van ISD Teaming Together.”

Guest speaker Van ISD superintendent Don Dunn will report on the progress after the tornado.

Have fun with the library

The Van Zandt County Library will be represented at the third annual Health and Safety Expo/Back to School Bash from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19, at Canton First United Methodist Church. 

The event is free, and includes bounce house, games, and information about services and programs offered within the community. 

Help the library and maybe help your Christmas list.  An American Girl Doll and an Acer Chrome book are the raffle items offered by the Friends of the Library this fall.  Tickets are available at the library.   Only 152 tickets are available for each item.

“Poorer Richard’s Almanac,” written by the late Benjamin Franklin-also known as Tom Blair—is a commentary on contemporary America.  It is written in Franklin’s style, and is sprinkled with quotes from the original “Poor Richard’s Almanac.”   It’s a good read, check it out.

FBC hosting ‘Set Apart’ women’s program

First Baptist Church of Canton’s Women’s Ministry will present “Set Apart” with speaker Christi Bullard Sept. 26.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a brunch in the gym followed by a drama “Mirror, Mirror” and the special program in the worship center.

Tickets are $10 and are available in the church office, 303 Athens St.

New Rotarian

Canton Rotary Club President Karen Paul recently welcomed Mindi Holland as the newest member of the Canton club. Holland is an associate with the T.A. Hale Allstate Insurance Agency and works as a volunteer with Van Zandt County Animal Rescue.

Retired teachers to meet

The first meeting for the Van Zandt County Retired Teachers Association for the 2015-‘16 year will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15 at the American National Bank in Canton.

The program will be presented by Paul Fike, fitness trainer at Trinity Mother Frances.

All retired teachers and school personnel are invited to attend the meeting.  All retired school personnel are eligible and encouraged to join the Van Zandt County Retired Teachers unit even if you are not retired from a school in Van Zandt County, members said.

Locals join American Angus Association

Tommy Allen, 4 F Cattle and  Dalton Fullwood, all of Canton, are a new members of the American Angus Association, reports Richard Wilson, interim CEO of the national breed organization headquartered in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Fullwood is a junior member.

The American Angus Association, with nearly 25,000 active adult and junior members, is the largest beef breed association in the world. Its computerized records include detailed information on over 18 million registered Angus.

Genealogical group sets fall seminar Sept. 12, 13

The East Texas Genealogical Society's annual fall seminar will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 and 9 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Fellowship Hall of First Assembly of God Church, 5309 Rhones Quarter Rd. in Tyler.

Cost is $15 for the Sept. 12 session and $50 for the Sept. 13 event.

A $10 box lunched can be pre-ordered for the Saturday event before Sept. 4.

Sessions will be lead by John A. Sellars.

The topic of the Sept. 12 session will be “Here comes the Judge: Your Ancestor’s Day in Court.”

Sept. 13 seminars include “What’s hidden in courthouse records?” “Was Grandpa his brother’s keeper? (a study of the Masonic Fraternity); “Researching newspapers in cyberspace and beyond,” “Giving your research the old college try! Researching in colleges and university archives.”
