Rodgers named Jackson Church minister

Ed Rodgers has been named the Jackson Church of Christ minister.

Rodgers is a semi-retired minister for Churches of Christ and has preached for congregations in California, Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma and Texas.

Rodgers’ wife, Darlene, will teach a Bible class at the church. The couple has been married for more than 56 years.

Services for the Jackson Church of Christ is at 10 a.m. Sunday morning and worship is at 11 a.m. Rodgers can be reached at 903-267-9792.

Genealogical Society learns about indentured servants

"Records of Indentured Servants" will be the topic for the Aug. 22 general meeting of the Van Zandt County Genealogical Society at 2 p.m. in the Buchanan Room of the main county library located on First Monday Lane in Canton. 

Marynell Bryant of Hopkins County will be the special speaker. She is a retired journalism teacher from Sulphur Springs High School with 35 years of experience. She has bachelors and master’s degree in journalism from Texas A&M University at Commerce. She is a member of DAR, US Daughters of 1812, Daughters of American Colonists, Colonial Dames XVIIth Century, and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She is also the administrator for the national Rainey/Raney DNA Surname project, chair of the Texas Heritage Certificates, TSGS, past president of Texas State Genealogical Society (3 terms), and past president, treasurer, and current librarian for Hopkins County Genealogical Society.

Ranch Academy Charter School accepting students

The Ranch Academy is now enrolling new students for grades eight through 12.

The school will have informational meetings from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 15, or 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Ranch Academy is an open enrollment public Charter School with a credit recovery program. It features accelerated instruction where children can learn at their own pace in small classes with individualized attention, school officials said.

Ranch Academy educators have been serving local students for 17 years, they said.

The school is located at 3120 VZCR 2318 in Canton.

Main Street movies continue with ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’

The Canton Main Street summer outdoor movie series continues this week with ‘Planes: Fire & Rescue’ sponsored by Hilliard’s Furniture.

The movie will start at dark on Friday, Aug.14, across from the Plaza Theater in downtown Canton.

“There will be firetrucks on the scene so bring the little ones out to take a look at the firetruck and possibly get hosed down,” said Austin Melton, Canton Visitor’s Bureau coordinator.

The movie location is across from the Plaza Theater, 119 N. Buffalo St.

The full length motion picture will start at dark, which is about 8:30 p.m. Concessions will be available including hotdogs, popcorn, candy and soft drinks. All proceeds go to the Canton Main Street Program, which helps with the revitalization of the downtown area.

“Come cool off and watch a great movie with your family and friends,” Melton said. “All you need to bring is yourself, a friend and a lawn chair.”

Canton residents Dennis Clarkson and Mason Baugh recently attended the Jason Witten SCORE Foundation dinner held at the home of the Dallas Cowboy player and his wife, Michelle, a registered nurse at Parkland Hospital. The SCORE Foundation funds outreach programs across the state including mentoring programs at battered women’s shelters, domestic violence prevention programs at the high school level and youth fitness programs.

Ray admitted to practice before Supreme Court

Richard L. Ray, senior partner of Ray & Thatcher, P.C., has qualified and been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, effective March 2015.

To be admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington D.C., one must be nominated by  two attorneys who themselves are admitted to practice before the Supreme Court.

Ray was nominated by Richard Grainger, a certified personal injury litigator in Tyler

and Michael Jones, managing partner of Potter, Minton of Tyler.

The selection committee then considers experience, expertise, and ethics.

The Rotary Club of Canton heard guest speaker Kerry Cartier from the Van Zandt Children's Shelter last week. The support of Van Zandt county citizens is important in meeting the needs of the foster children at the shelter, Cartier said. The shelter operates using a residential environment with foster parents who care for the children on a daily basis. Rotary President Karen Paul thanked Cartier for speaking to the club.

Talent Box to present “The Butler Did It”

Opening night for "The Butler Did It", written by Tim Kelly, will be at 7:30 p.m.  Friday, Aug. 21 at The Talent Box, a nonprofit community theatre,  located at 244 N. 4th, Wills Point. 

Other regular seating performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22,  and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23. 

Dinner theatre seating will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 and 29. 

There will be a reception following the opening night performance.

Due to problems with a chair lift, handicap access will not be available.
Admission for adults is $10; seniors/students is $8; and children age 12 and under is $5. 

Dinner admission is $17 per person with $10 for children age 10 and under when accompanied by an adult. 

Prepaid reservations are required and may be made by calling the theatre at 903-873-8945.  Leave your name, telephone number, number in your party and date you wish to attend.  Calls will be returned.
