Make-A-Wish seeks volunteers

Make-A-Wish North Texas granted 650 wishes last year and is currently looking for a significant number of volunteers, especially in Van Zandt County to work directly with wish kids. A wish-granting volunteer meets with the child and her/his family to help determine the child's most heartfelt wish while planning special enhancements throughout the wish process. Wish granters work in teams of two alongside Make-A-Wish staff to ensure every eligible child's wish comes true. A specialized, but relatively simple, training program is provided before contact is made with a wish family.
For information on applying to become a volunteer, contact msawyer@ntx.wish.org or at 214-496-9479.
Additional information can be found at www.ntx.wish.org.

CEDC, council discuss Innovation Park

The Canton Economic Development Corporation discussed a proposal for the Canton Innovation Park during their January meeting.
A project called a “business incubator,” was discussed thoroughly, with pros and cons of the project
Canton Visitors Bureau Coordinator Austin Melton, who presented the project to the CEDC, said that “business incubator was an excellent solution for small businesses and startups who need office space to get their plain developed and start operations, and for people who need a desk with excellent internet.”
The proposed location would be on at 24980 Highway 64 E., where the old Canton Police Department headquarters and municipal court was previously.
The idea, Melton said, “is that the incubator would help small businesses and entrepreneurs succeed and transition to independence.”
Melton said that there were a number of incentives involved in the project.

Scam hits residents in VZC

Can you hear me?" Police in several states are urging people to avoid answering this simple question from a phone number they do not know.
Authorities say the question is aimed at getting unsuspecting victims to say "yes" -- an answer the fraudster then records as a way to authorize charges on a phone, utility or credit card bill.
The scam involves the victim saying “yes,” and then their voice is recorded saying “yes.” Other questions might be, “Are you the lady of the house?"; "Do you pay the household telephone bills?"; or "Are you the homeowner?”
Those who receive a phone call asking “Can you hear me?” should hang up the phone and not answer.
In many cases, scammers will play back a person's verbal confirmation and threaten to take legal action if they try to deny the charges.
