Stewart, Odic push for plan approval

The Canton city council heard from three councilmembers regarding personal requests during the city council meeting Feb. 21.

Councilman Shawn Stewart asked the council to consider a plan regarding the Canton Animal Shelter, Councilwoman Connie Odic presented a plan to have the city’s tennis courts resurfaced and Councilwoman Cindy Malouf asked for information on grants for housing renovations.

Councilman Shawn Stewart requested a discussion on waiving adopting and spay/neuter fees for the Canton Animal Shelter.

Master Gardener geranium fundraiser in full bloom

The Van Zandt County Free State Master Gardeners are selling red, coral and fuchsia geraniums this year.  The one gallon plants are grown locally and will be delivered March 30.

This is the third year the Master Gardeners have sold geraniums to the public, and last year they were in full bloom and beautiful when delivered, Master Gardeners said.

“Get a head start on your summer gardens! Order from a Van Zandt County Master Gardener today, or give Pat Mullin a call at 903-520-8556 or the Van Zandt County Extension Office at 903-567-4149. Geraniums are to be paid for in advance, and March 20 is the deadline for orders,” said event organizers.

County implements job training program

Dan Maucieri, the human resource director for Van Zandt County, looks over information from Workforce Solutions of East Texas.

A new training program between Van Zandt County and Workforce Solutions of East Texas is underway to help with younger and less experienced individuals to get involved in the workforce.

Dan Maucieri, who was recently appointed to serve as the county’s new human resources director, has been working with Debra Holcomb of Workforce Solutions to begin the program.

Maucieri presented the program in a recent meeting of the county commissioners and received approval.

Canton City Hall to hold open house

An open house for the new Canton City Hall will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 9 with a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. by the Canton Chamber of Commerce.

The new city hall is located just north of the Canton Visitor’s Center (old Plaza Theater) at 201 N. Buffalo. “Please come tour your new city office facilities, enjoy refreshments and visit with members of the council and staff,” city officials said.

CISD talk senate bills, cameras

The invocation was led by sophomore Tanner Morgan and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by sophomore Shaylee Watson at the Canton ISD board meeting.

The Canton ISD Board of Trustees met Feb. 20 to discuss the impact of legislation passed by legislature that would potentially have an effect on the district’s employees.

Specifically, Superintendent Jay Tullos discussed Senate Bill 3 and Senate Bill 13.

Tullos briefly explained Senate Bill 3, which is a “voucher bill.” Tullos said that there would need to be equal accountability in private and public schools

Senate Bill 3 would establish two forms of vouchers: Education Savings Accounts and Tax Credit Scholarships/Educational Expense Assistance. As proposed, the plan will drain up to $100 million from already-underfunded Texas public schools for tax credits.

Eaglettes compete at Lindale Tournament

Shelby Vestal winds up during a 5-1 Canton Eaglette win over Grand Saline Feb. 25. Vestal finished the game allowing just one run while striking out eight over five innings of work.

The Canton Eaglettes nearly ran the table during their appearance at the Lindale Tournament Feb. 24-25, finishing 4-1 overall with wins over Lindale, Spring Hill, Hawkins and Grand Saline at the event.

Canton began play early in the morning Feb. 24, getting a shutdown pitching performance Shelby Vestal in a 4-2 win over host Lindale. Vestal picked up the tournament opening win for the Eaglettes, surrendering just four hits and an earned run in five innings of work.

The Eaglettes got all four of their runs in the first inning, led by RBIs from both Reagan Busby and Grayson Reid in the effort. Offensive leaders for Canton included Busby going 1/3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, Reid going 1/3 with a double and an RBI, Kylie Floyd going 1/2 with a double and a run scored, Haylee Miles going 1/3 with a run scored and Gracie Chavez going 1/2 with a run scored.

TEA Party meeting date changed

The date of the next monthly meeting of the Canton/Edom TEA Party has been changed to March 3.

The meeting will take place at Edom City Limits at 7 p.m.

The main topic of the meeting will be on illegal immigration. As an introduction to the subject, TEA Party member Tom Maddox, a member of the Texas Border Volunteers, will give a report from that organization

The main speaker will be Dr. Stephen Steinlight, a Senior Policy Anaylst for the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington, D. C.

VZC Sheriff’s Office to begin program

Van Zandt County Sheriff Dale Corbett is striving to generate a more COACTIVE relationship between The Van Zandt Sheriff’s Office and the citizens it serves.  Part of his strategy is to actively seek members of the community to join the Citizens Sheriff Academy Program.

The program was designed to allow members of the community an opportunity to develop a better understanding of their sheriff’s office through education.  Also, it allows members of the sheriff’s office to establish a better rapport and maintain trust and respect from the citizens that it protects and serves.

Heart to heart

Students at Canton Elementary School participated in a Jump Rope For Heart fundraising event for the American Heart Association last week. The events engage students with jumping rope or playing basketball while empowering them to improve their own health and help other kids with heart-health issues.
