Canton maintenance plans to conduct overlay operations on the I-20 Service Roads between Mile Markers 514 and 516. Crews will also perform routine maintenance work on roadways around the county. Lane closures are possible at work locations.

It was a night of new faces and special recognitions during the Canton City Council meeting April 15. New council members Daniel Deibert and Andrew Vaughn were sworn in as councilmembers. Deibert and Vaughn will fill the seats of previous councilmembers Shawn Stewart and Scott Perkins. Councilwoman Cindy Malouf ran uncontested and was also appointed as Mayor Pro-Tem.

On May 16, 2018, the Canton Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division and the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant for narcotics at a residence in the 900 block of West Dallas St. Canton.
Seven persons were arrested for charges ranging from manufacture and delivery of controlled substance penalty group 1 in a drug free zone, possession of controlled substance penalty group 1 and abandon/endanger child.

AUSTIN — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week asked two federal agencies to move quickly to fund the state’s Healthy Texas Women program.
The program was cut off from Medicaid funding by the Obama administration in 2012 after the Texas Legislature enacted a law preventing taxpayer money from going to abortion providers.
On Jan. 12, 2017, the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, Canton Police Department, ATF and DEA conducted an arrest and search operation on the business and residence of Michael Goggans of Edgewood.
Due to an upcoming meeting in Frisco, the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court held its regular meeting two days early on May 14 in the VZC Courthouse.
At the beginning of the meeting, VZC Judge Don Kirkpatrick reminded those in attendance that Early Voting for the May 22 Primary Runoff Elections was underway and would continue through Friday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Extended hours were available Wednesday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Canton Fire Department responded to a call at 5:57 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 at 25154 E. Hwy. 64 which is at the intersection of Highways 64 and 17 to extinguish a fire that engulfed five storage sheds. While speculation immediately arose that The Mountain was on fire yet again, Captain Brian Horton with the CFD laid rumors to rest regarding the location of the fire and said the fire’s location was “not on The Mountain.”
Rainy skies outside could not dampen the spirits of those attending inside during the National Day of Prayer service May 3 held in the Van Zandt County Court at Law courtroom.
The service opened with music by the Van Zandt County Community Choir led by First Baptist Church of Canton Minister of Music John Bell as the choir led those in attendance in the singing of the National Anthem and “God Bless the USA.”
