Election moving forward despite controversy

 

Van Zandt County will see its political runoff races come to an end on May 22, with the Republican Primary runoff election of VZC Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace and VZC District Judge along with the United States House of Representatives District 5 race.

In the Democratic Primary runoff race for governor, Lupe Valdez will face off against Andrew White.

VZC Sheriff Corbett released from hospital

At the beginning of the regular meeting of the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court May 2, VZC Chief Deputy Mike Bates reported that VZC Sheriff Dale Corbett was in the hospital receiving treatment for an infection.

VZC Chief Deputy Mike Bates reported May 7 that VZC Sheriff Dale Corbett is home recuperating after being released from the hospital May 4.

I20 Dodge rebuilds

 

 

The i20 Dodge dealership was one of the most photographed places hit by the April 2017 tornadoes. The dealership is located on 15710 I-20 Frontage Road, a unique spot for a vehicle dealership to sell Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles and all makes and models of pre-owned vehicles. 

The grand showroom and service area of the i20 Dodge dealership was weeks away from opening when the April 29 tornadoes ripped through the dealership destroying inventory, the showroom and an eight-bay service area.

Sides Pea Farm back in action

 

 

 

On April 30, 2017, Virginia Sides stood on her pea farm and surveyed what remained of the Sides Pea Farm on Farm-to-Market 2909 in Van Zandt County after a slew of tornadoes wiped out everything on the property. Since 1957, Sides Pea Farm has been a staple in Van Zandt County, growing fresh produce and remaining a constant fixture in the landscape.  One year later, Sides Pea Farm has recovered from the carnage with a complete rebuild and a grand opening set for June 1.

April in Edom dates set

 

The annual April in Edom Old-Fashioned Fold and Street Fair will be held April 21-22 in Edom at the intersection of Highways 279 and 314. “Plan a weekend of fun for your whole family, including pets, with 80 vendors selling hand-made and vintage items, pet parades and float contests, an interactive kids area, great foods and 40 performers on two stages,” said organizers.

Crick wins chili cook-off on The Mountain

What a beautiful day it was here on The Mountain, in Canton during the 19th annual CASI sanctioned chili cook-off.  Therapy Dogs of Van Zandt County raised some much-needed funds for their 501 (c) 3 charity in hopes of helping to get a service dog for a deserving veteran. First place winner in chili was Jennifer Crick from Garland; second place winner was Doddie Johnson from Irving; and third place winner was Mack Walker.

First place Showmanship was Sharon Neff from Irving with her “Wild Woman Chili;” second-place, Carolyn Whetstone from Euless; and third place showmanship went to. Dottie Carnes from Mabank with her “Slow-N- Easy” chili. A

Two arrested on animal cruelty charges

Vicky Laniece Patrick, 59, and Darlene Elizabeth Broseh ,56, both of Canton, were arrested on Friday, April 6, by VZC Pct. 2 Constable Jesse Ison on warrants for animal cruelty charges.

Patrick and Broseh recently surrendered their animals after 60 living, and 11 deceased canines were found in their residence. Public interest in the case was increased after media outlets reported that the ladies were operating a “puppy mill” out of the home they shared in Canton.
