A new policy regarding law enforcement pay and overtime was approved unanimously by the Van Zandt County Commissioners Court during a special called meeting Sept. 26.
The issue was first presented by VZC Human Resources Director Dan Maucieri to the commissioners’ court Sept. 19 during their regular meeting.

The TVEC Charitable Foundatoin has awarded a grant for $3,000 to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Van Zandt County. The grant was awarded Sept. 4.
The TVEC Charitable Foundation is funded by donations from Operation Round Up which is a voluntary program that allows TVEC members to round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar amount. The portion that is rounded up goes to the TVEC Charitable Foundation and may be used to award grant requests to local charitable organizations.
After previously announcing her retirement earlier this year, Van Zandt County District Judge Teresa Drum of the 294th District Court has now decided to remain in office until the end of her term.
Drum released a statement June 29 that she would be retiring from office after 16 years on the bench. She was waiting to hear from the Governor’s office regarding someone to be appointed to fill out the remainder of her term as she could not leave office until someone was appointed to step in.

A historical marker dedication was held for Thomas Jefferson Towles Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Hillcrest Cemetery. The event was hosted by the Canton Main Street Program and the Van Zandt Historical Commission.
VZC Commissioner Pct. 4 Tim West welcomed guests to the dedication and VZC Commissioner Pct. 3 Keith Pearson led the invocation.
The Canton ISD School Board met Sept. 17 to recognize teachers of the month and to also report on a fund balance policy. Superintendent Jay Tullos outlined the policy and the assignment of the additional funds.
On Monday, Aug. 20, the Van Zandt County Historical Commission made a special presentation to the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial. Those in attendance included members of the Van Zandt County Historical Commission, County Judge Don Kirkpatrick, County Commissioners Tim West and Virgil Melton Jr. along with representatives from the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial.
