Panel hears about what’s being done to ‘harden’ school campuses

 

 

AUSTIN — The Texas House Committee on Appropriations met Oct. 9 to hear ideas on improving school safety in the aftermath of the May 18 Santa Fe High School shooting that left eight students and two teachers dead and 13 injured.

Honored Warriors Ranch gives to Veteran home

Matt Fisk is a big man, in stature, in commitment to our country, and in dedication to the cause of helping homeless veterans.  Matt, a 16-year Army Veteran, has waged war against his own post traumatic stress disorder and is winning.  He is the founder and director of LancerLegacyRanch.org, a 24,000 square foot homeless veteran shelter that has been open since November 2017 in Maud.  The ranch can accommodate 24 male homeless veterans with their own efficiency apartments and there are rooms available.  The facility has a large, common, commercial kitchen, indoor and outdoor recreation and meeting areas, a large shop, and now the beginnings of a gym.

“Double Wide, Texas Christmas” to be presented Nov. 9-10 in Edom

East Texan reports losing over $27,000 to IRS imposter

 

The Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers to anticipate an uptick in IRS imposter calls this month. An East Texas consumer contacted BBB and reported over $27,000 was given to an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) imposter.

A longing for Hope

“It was His love that kept me going,” said Joyce Gassiott, on remembering the summer of 2011, the year of a monumental personal journey both physical and spiritual.

After a midst of great loss in her family, Joyce was diagnosed with breast cancer and remarked that through it all, it was God’s love that propelled her to keep her faith and ride out the storm.

Making better decisions key in addressing juvenile behavior

 

With help from the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial aluminum can collection program, VZC Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sandra Plaster is trying to help juveniles she comes across in her courtroom to make better decisions for their lives.

Plaster held a follow-up hearing Oct. 10 in her courtroom for three juvenile males who were arrested in June and charged with Minors in Possession (MIP) of alcohol.

A number of Canton High School students met for prayer around the high school flag pole during the annual See You at the Pole Day Sept. 26. Crossroads Church of Canton Student Minister Frank Trimble led the group in prayer.

Registration underway for Nov. 6 election

The Nov. 6 General Election will see numerous campaigns come to an end for many state races, including those of United States senator, governor and Texas attorney general. Local voters will recognize races for the US House of Representatives District 5 seat, held by Jeb Hensarling. Hensarling did not file for re-election and the State Senator District 2 seat held by republican Bob Hall.

The General Election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6. The last day to register to vote is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Early voting will be held Monday, Oct. 22 through Friday, Nov. 2.

Nava crowned homecoming queen

Katie Nava was crowned the 2018 Canton High School Homecoming Queen Friday, Sept. 28. The 2018 Homecoming senior nominees were Nava, Mattie Tullos, Piper Beasley and Avery Simmons; duchesses were Katie Willkerson, Carly Autry, Ashley Riffe and Hannah Manry.
