Local racer earns spot at motocross national championship

Hurricane Mills, Tenn. – Canton’s Mason Wright, son of Jason and Tammy Durgin Wright, just made his dream come true.

The 6-year-old dirt bike racer has qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 34th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship presented by AMSOIL at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

Mason took on more than 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1,483 qualifying positions.

“The Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s is the event every motocross racer in the country wants to compete in,” said Event Director Tim Cotter. “A win at the Amateur Nationals gives a rider instant national notoriety and can serve as a springboard to a lucrative professional motocross career.”

Canton Snap Dragons bring home second in district tourney

The Canton Snap Dragons recently won second place in the Amateur Softball Association District Tournament.

The Snap Dragons are a girls T-ball team from Canton.  Players are Lexi Etheridge, Makayla Mazingo, Rylee Owens, Jaycee Conway, Kenzie Jones, Laramie Woody, Landry Smith, Payton Gayle, Lila Shaw, Lily Shaw and Lexi Kinsey.  Coaches are Ashley Williamson, Adam Smith, Andrea Jones and Loni Kinsey.

The Snap Dragons were drafted in March 2015 and had an undefeated season at Canton Youth Recreation Association, where they finished as co-champions.

Congratulations Canton Girls 8U All Star Team

The Canton 8U Girls All Star team competed in the 8U District All Star tournament held in Brownsboro on July 6th-9th. They went undefeated in the seven team tournament and brought home the first place trophy.

The All Star girls are Haley Luce, Aivia Stiege, Abbey Thelan, Grace Thompson, Kynzie Miller, Allison Rickman, Kara Pride, Makayla McLemore, Braleigh Whitus, Lilly Cervantes and Avery Mayer. Coaches are Jess Pride, Andrew Rickman, Jason Thompson, and Amber Cervantes.

Jeff Fisher killed his 500th feral hog July 8 on the Spring Lake 1092-acre game preserve behind the artisan well on Hwy. 19. Fisher used a 1873 model Winchester .44-40 to kill the wild pig.

CHS football tickets on sale soon

Canton High School will be selling football tickets beginning in August.

2014 season ticket holders may purchase the same seats only beginning Monday, August 3, through Thursday, August 6.

In a press release outlining ticket sales, the CHS athletic department noted, “You must purchase your tickets by August 6, to be guaranteed your same seats. Seats not claimed by August 6 will be forfeited and made available for others to purchase.

“On Friday, August 7 ONLY, those who have re-purchased their season tickets by Thursday, August 6, may bring in their tickets and exchange them for the same number of unclaimed seats in a different location. You may not purchase additional seats at this time. 2015 season tickets may be purchased at Canton High School located at 1110 W. Hwy 243 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Season tickets are $24 per seat (four home games). All sales are final.

Sneaky Cleats wins championship

Sneaky Cleats 04-Pride took home the championship trophy June 6, 2015, in the 10U Queen of Swing Slam held in Midlothian. Sneaky Cleats-04 Pride won a close semi-finals game against Texas Elite from Frisco and a close tough fought championship game against D1 Softball  of Dallas.  Sneaky Cleats is coached by Jason Pride and Chad Rose of Canton.

Hey now, you’re an All-Star

The Canton Girls T-Ball All-Star Team won the ArkLaTex Tri State T-Ball Championships in Whitehouse June 20. The team went undefeated throughout the tournament. Players are Teely Salazar, Peyton Goodson, Addyson Scott, Taryn Overturf, Laramie Woody, Rylee Owens, Kenzie Jones, Allison Bitter, Addison Capps, Landry Smith, Lexi Etheridge and Brilen Butcher. Coaches are Tyke Salazar, Ashley Williamson, Adam Smith and Michelle Butcher.

Eaglette basketball camp set July 4-6

The 2015 Canton Eaglette Basketball Camp will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 6 through 8 at the Canton High School main gym.

The camp will be for incoming seventh through ninth graders.

 Cost of the camp will be $40 and will include a camp T-shirt, organizers sad

Focus of the camp will be to allow the players and Coach Randy Henderson to start working together toward the bright future that the Eaglette basketball program can achieve in the coming years, organizers said.

The camp will stress offensive fundamentals and competitive effort.

CHS Fishing Team hoping to hook new members

The Canton High School Fishing Team is gearing up for another season.

Last season CHS had seven teams compete at the State level. 

The CHS Fishing Team is a member of the Texas High School Bass Association. For more information about the organization, visit the website www.texashighschoolbassassn.com.

To be a member of the CHS Fishing Team, a student:

  Must be a full time student at Canton High School, grades nine through 12

  Must meet grade eligibility in order to compete at each tournament

  Fish in teams of two students and an adult boat captain

  Pay a $20 membership fee to THSBA

•  Be ready for tournament fishing beginning in September 2015 (exact date TBD)
