One down, one to go for Eagles

Eagle lineman gave senior running back Jordan Jackson plenty of running room against the Mt. Vernon defense in a scrimmage at Norris Birdwell Stadium in Canton on Aug. 14.

The Canton Eagles cleared one of their two remaining hurdles prior to the start of the regular season on Aug. 15, taking on Mt. Vernon in a home scrimmage at Norris Birdwell Stadium.

The Eagles put together a consistent effort on both sides of the football, getting the better of the District 7-3A Tigers throughout the scrimmage at all age levels.

Canton is scheduled to travel in county tonight (Aug. 20) to take on the Edgewood Bulldogs beginning at 5 p.m. Edgewood enters the upcoming season coming off a disappointing 2014 campaign that saw the team finish 3-8 overall, including a bi-district round playoff loss.

The Bulldogs, one of the better defenses in Van Zandt County, return several key pieces, including All-District First Team linebacker Tye Elie, All-District First Team cornerback Devin Davison, All-District Second Team linebacker Clayton Cox, and All-District Second Team cornerback Turner Bannister that could test the Eagles’ offense.

Eaglettes open 2015 season

Coach Liz Ramsey and the Canton Eaglette volleyball team kick off their season in earnest this week, a week after getting back to work the first two-a-day workouts of the 2015 season on Aug. 3.

Canton took part in two playdays over the weekend, traveling to Athens on Aug. 7 and Aug. 8 before squaring off with Quinlan in their home opener on Aug. 11.

Speaking shortly after the scrimmages, Ramsey, now entering her second season, noted the difference that a year of working together has made in her program.

“Skill wise, we’re a lot farther along. The girls know me, know my personality so they know how I like to run things…Conditioning wise (after summer) we’re still working on where we need to be but skill and knowledge wise I think we’re set for the season. They know how I work, they know how I like things done so it’s a lot easier to get through practice this year because we’re familiar with us.”

The opening kickoff of the 2015 Canton football season continues to draw closer this week with the Eagles set to test themselves against Mt. Vernon in a scrimmage at Norris Birdwell Stadium on Aug. 15.

On Canton’s media day (Aug. 8), Coach Robert Ivey was quick to praise the team’s work through the first week of two-a-days. Ivey stated, “We’re six days in and for six years being here this is the best first week we’ve ever had. I really do. Our kids have showed up with a great attitude and great work ethic. I’m just excited about the effort and attitude more than anything.”

Eaglettes looking to extend playoff streak

Coach Robert Ivey and the Canton Eagle football team got back to work on Monday morning, putting in heavy hours during two-a-days to get themselves ready to compete for the 2015 season.

The Eagles enter the season coming off a 5-5 campaign that saw them build up a 4-0 record before injuries to key pieces on both sides of the ball derailed their playoff hopes.

Junior quarterback Hunter Moore is expected to lead the offense in 2015 after being pressed into starting duty during Canton’s loss to Wills Point in week five of the season.

Moore showed plenty of flashes, finishing 92-168 for 865 yards and 10 touchdowns through the air.

Other key returning pieces for Canton offensively will include 6’2” wide receiver Tre Fitzgerald and playmaking running back Jordan Jackson.
