This Week in Canton History

Canton Herald – Nov. 10, 1960:  Democrats Win With Kennedy And Johnson Team

Democrat John F. Kennedy Tuesday night won an exciting struggle for the presidency.

The 43-year-old Massachusetts Senator and war hero won the election on a platform calling for America to face and conquer “new frontiers.”

His smashing victory over President Eisenhower’s choice for a successor, Republican Vice President Richard M. Nixon, means that the Democrats will return to full power in Washington to put through a promised liberal program. The Democrats were recaptured the White House after eight years of Republican tenancy, and retained the control they now have in the Congress.

Kennedy’s victory also proved that an American of Catholic faith can be elected to the highest office in the land.

Reflect on heroism for Veterans Day

Veterans' Day is a holiday that started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service; and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.

However in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans' Day” in order to account for all veterans of all wars. In Canada, Remembrance Day is celebrated on the same day.

Friday, Nov. 11 was be a holiday for library staff. Also, since the library was closed, there was no Storytime this week. But if you want a meaningful outing, visit the VZC Veterans' Memorial. While there, enjoy seeing the new “Never Forgotten” Kneeling Soldier statue, read the names of Van Zandt veterans who gave their lives in service to our country, and read the bricks that bear the names of those who have served and are now serving in the military.

At the VZC Library, everyone is family

Rhonda Adams

Families, by Google definition, is “a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household.”

In modern times, this may be far from true. People have many ways of defining a family and what being a part of a family means to them. This week’s Storytime will focus on families.

The volunteer profile this week is about someone who puts in many hours of preparation for her job as Storytime coordinator, Rhonda Adams.

Her interest in the library began when she brought her kids to Storytime and when they entered school, she was asked to take over the program.

Mrs. Rhoda is a stay-at-home mom and holds a bachelor's degree in communication. Her library work includes the Storytime once a week plus putting a craft together to total about 2 or 3 hours weekly.

She said her favorite part of volunteering at the library is the kids.

Officials urge state’s high court not to expand same-sex marriage ruling

Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the Texas Supreme Court over issues they say were not addressed in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case declaring same-sex marriage a fundamental right.

The three officials asked the Texas Supreme Court to accept their view that Obergefell v. Hodges, the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2015 decision recognizing a right to same-sex marriage “does not resolve all constitutional issues relating same-sex marriage.” The brief points to Parker v. Pigeon and related cases involving a Houston mayor’s extending benefits to same-sex spouses of city employees, and asks that a lower court’s temporary injunction preventing the extension of those benefits be reinstated.

The brain, the gut and the mind

As we enter the season for eating too much stuff, let us do some serious thinking. This will require the use of the brain, the gut (belly) and the mind. So, shut off the negative garbage on CNN and Fox, get comfy and read this heavy stuff. It just might extend your life.

The brain is an organ of soft tissue stuffed in the skull.  From birth, it is fed with sensations, emotions, attitudes and information. It does not know right from wrong or good from bad. It is like a massive computer that processes data. It does not like changing the data. Change is critical to growing as individuals so give it a try. If you are a right hander, write left handed for one hour. That brain will fight you all the way. It will send alerts to the belly that could give you headaches, heart burn or other stress related sensations. You will get stressed out.

Wet/Dry Election

Financial Impact on the City of Canton

We Americans have many important decisions to make between now and the end of the day on Nov. 8.  One of the decisions which will affect our quality of life in Canton is the wet/dry election. Personally, I have received two separate automated robotic calls from the FOR side. Both of them spoke about the amount of sales tax that will “surely” come into our city.  These two calls informed me that for every $1 spent in Canton on beer/wine, that there will be additional money spent on other products.

Knowing before you vote

I don’t know about everyone else, but my wife and I are exhausted and ready for this election to be over and in the books.

From the primaries all the way up to where we are today, both presidential campaigns have been nothing short of a made-for-TV reality show, and the past 10 months have been filled with enough garbage to choke a horse (as my granny used to say.)

My wife and I like to think we are well-informed voters. We believe we do our homework and conduct our own research on the candidates. We try and stay clear of less than credible news sources and see past the rhetoric. Fat chance this year. This entire election has had us stressed out and in a cloud of confusion and anxiety over the future of our country.

Judge reaffirms, expands reach of injunction against bathroom directive

Fort Worth-based U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor has reaffirmed his Aug. 21 injunction placing a temporary hold on federal guidelines for accommodating transgender students in the use of public school bathrooms and locker rooms.

In his order last week, O’Connor also denied a request by the Obama administration to limit the injunction to Texas and 12 other states that signed on as plaintiffs. The administration asked that the injunction not apply to states that did not sue for relief. In his order, O’Connor wrote, “A nationwide injunction is necessary because the alleged violation extends nationwide. Defendants are a group of agencies and administrators capable of enforcing their Guidelines nationwide, affecting numerous state and school district facilities across the country.”
