The “To Do” list Well, January is over and that was the month we all made our New Year Resolutions. Now we are in the month of February. It’s a good thing it is the shortest month of the year so we don’t have so long to make excuses for not staying on the great diet we started in January. Diets do not work. They are not sustainable. Think about it. If you lost one pound a week on that frenzy diet, that would have been 52 pounds this year. If it worked and you made it a habit, in 10 years you would be 520 pounds lighter. Hey, I have been where you are at least 15 times.
Libraries are glad to get book donations, but when donating please check the following: the book shouldn't have yellow pages or an odor; it should be no more than 5 years old; and check for spiders and other pests. The librarians don't look forward to meeting those creepy crawlies! Once your donation is made at the back door, the librarians examine the books and divide into three categories. First, the books that will be added to library shelves have to be cataloged, labels printed, covered with durable plastic and finally, shelved in the proper area. The second choice is for books that the library does not need, usually because they are already on the shelves or not needed for other reasons. These are sent to booksellers who buy them and resell them. Volunteers generally box these for mailing.

Jan. 26, 1961-A butane truck, owned by Butane Supplies Inc, of Tyler, got loose on the highway in the center of Canton early Monday morning about 5 o’clock and jack-knifed into Ben Brown’s Mobil Station in Canton with considerable impact. The driver, Moss William Parker of Chandler, got out of his truck and was working on another of the company’s truck nearby on Highway 64 in the middle of Canton.
It’s late January, the high temperature today will be 70 degrees, and our topic is getting ready for winter. Perhaps we will have a couple months of cold weather, perhaps not. If we do, let’s get ready for it! How deep in the ground are your water pipes? When the ground surface freezes, the cold penetrates the ground. Eventually it will get deep enough to freeze your water pipes. We all know about keeping a little water running through the pipes to prevent them from freezing. To be on the safe side, start the water when the outdoor temperature is forecast to be freezing. How long should you let the water run? It depends on how long it stays below freezing and how deep your water pipes are. Ours are a foot deep. We dribble the water for twice as long as the weather stays below freezing. By the way, drink plenty of water. It’s easy to get dehydrated in winter. No one expects to get dehydrated in winter, so we never think about it.
Simple and consistent Last month I was introduced to a group of 35-year olds who were obsessed and unusually enthusiastic about keeping things simple and consistent. Of course, I was wearing my bright orange WAFOWASL shirt and bright red running shoes and speaking to a group of professionals dressed in business attire. I guess you could say I am a freak and according to Mr. Webster, the word freak is a noun and the definition is: “a person who is obsessed with or unusually enthusiastic about a specified interest.” By that definition, apparently I am not normal which is defined as conforming to the standard or the common type or usual.

Do you ever go into the library and see that there are not many patrons inside? It is very quiet and peaceful at the library. It was reported last week that last week that volunteers are needed to help the library run smoothly. In fact, volunteers help cover the wide array of activities and tasks that needed to be completed for the library to run smoothly. The annual report covering 2016 was just compiled by Van Zandt County Library Director Susie Pulley which also featured an enlightening picture of the numerous library activities.
