Exit Realty RPO celebrates 10 years

Owners are Mike and Debbie Murdock. State Rep. Dan Flynn and well-known musician Wesley Pruitt were among those in attendance.

FUMC Men complete service project

The United Methodist Men from Canton First United Methodist Church undertook a long project Nov. 4 and 5 at the Van Zandt County Veterans Memorial.

The men repainted all of the handrails around throughout the Veterans Memorial as a service to the community.

Scholtzky’s cuts ribbon

Schlotzsky’s of Canton opened the doors Nov. 10 with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Owners of the restaurant are Robert and Stacy Hurst. Cutting the ribbon were the Hursts and their son, Matthew and his wife Brae. Canton chamber members and city officials were also on hand during the event. Schlotzksy’s is located at 17279 I-20 Frontage Rd., Canton.

Dragons and fire come to Storytime

Books read during Storytime at VZC Library included ‘I Want to be a Firefighter” that tells of different kinds of equipment that the firefighters use. “Fire Trucks” that shows pictures of the trucks, hoses and ladders used by firemen, “ No Dragons for Tea” is about fire safety for kids and includes a dragon that sneezes and starts a fire in the kitchen during tea with a little girl. They both learn what to do in the case of a fire and “Stop Drop and Roll” about what to do in the case of a fire emergency.  The library will be closed next Friday for Veterans Day so the next Storytime will be on Nov. 18.   Come and join Ms. Rhonda at 10 a.m. at the Van Zandt County Library, 317 First Monday Lane, Canton.

Eek! Halloween comes to Storytime

There were princesses, a veterinarian, a policeman and even an Indian in attendance at Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library on Friday, Oct. 28.  Ms. Rhonda was dressed as a scarecrow and read ‘Eek Halloween’ by Sandra Boynton, whose illustrations are always fun.  Another book was ‘The Hallo-Wiener’ about a dachshund in a hot dog costume, this was written by Dav Pilkey who writes the Captain Underpants Series. The next book was ‘Nothing at All’ about a scarecrow. The last book was ‘Room on the Broom.’  The craft was a creepy black spider.

Storytime is held at the Van Zandt County Library, 317 First Monday Lane, Canton at 10 a.m. Friday mornings.

Santa’s Helpers prepare for Workshop

The Van Zandt Extension Education Association met on Oct. 17  and began designing one of kind cards, gift bags, tags, boxes and ornaments with the guidance of the talented scrape booking and card creator Cathy Cummins. 

Under the guidance of Mrs. Cummins the group created a one of a kind collection that will be available at the 2nd Annual Santa’s Workshop to be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 15. in the Farm Bureau Meeting Room. 

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent Melisa Rhodes of Van Zandt County along with County Extension Agents from Hopkins, Hunt, Kaufman, and Rains Counties will present a wide variety of items that will demonstrate how to survive the holidays on the budget with budget friendly gift ideas, recipes, and decorating tips.

Mathea Guild hears about health, healing

Mathea Guild met Oct. 13 at the American National Bank. Ann Russell held the meeting in the absence of Guild President Rose Dearman.

Shirley McMahan introduced Barbara Perez and Wendy James as the guest speakers. “Perez gave us information on prescription costs and James spoke on healing our body with nutrition and the importance of exercise and nutrition for our body. Both speakers gave us very helpful information on how to make changes in our daily living,” Guild member said.

Refreshments were furnished by Rhita Koches and Pat Hammond.

The next meeting of Mathea Guild will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Plaza Museum. Max Callahan will be the guest speaker.

Mathea Guild meetings are held the second Thursday of each month beginning in September and ending in May of each year.

Pumpkins, pumpkins

Ms. Rhonda read books about pumpkins during Storytime at the VZC Library.  ‘Pumpkin Day Pumpkin Night’ by Anne Rockwell, ‘The Pumpkin Patch Parable’ by Liz Curtis Higgs and ‘Big Pumpkin’ by Erica Silverman were the books of the day  Each child made an orange pumpkin to take home.  Join Ms. Rhonda at the Van Zandt County Library 317 First Monday Lane in Canton at 10 a.m. every Friday.

Baa, baa black sheep

During Storytime at the Van Zandt County Library  Ms. Rhonda read ‘Guess Who’s on the Farm’, ‘The Noisy, Noisy Farm’ which included meows from the cat, quacks from the duck, baaas from the sheep, mooos from the cow and even a cock a doodle doo from the rooster. 

The last book was ‘Hound Dawg’ which was a play on the classic Little Red Hen; however, in this story all the animals help make the cornbread except the dog. He later redeems himself by saving the cornbread from a raccoon trying to steal it while it’s cooling on the window ledge.  The children made a paper chicken during craft time.  Storytime is held at 10 a.m. every Friday at VZC Library.
