Participating in the bake sale from left to right was Brenda Jones, Canton Mayor Lou Ann Everett and Diane Poole.

The Van Zandt County Humane Society held its final fundraiser for 2016 at Higginbotham Ace Hardware in Canton.

Carol Whatley, president of the organization, spearheaded the event.  "Our annual Thanksgiving Bake Sale is such fun, and many people in the community look forward to it.  The team at Ace Hardware is always so generous with their assistance and space for us to set up, and we appreciate them.  Usually, when we are ready to leave, we will offer the employees whatever they wish at half price, but this year we sold completely out before noon.  This event was a real success, and we thank everyone who contributed."

All proceeds go directly to the care of the animals.  VZCHS is non-profit, all volunteer and organized under 501(c)3 guidelines.  For further information about their work, visit vzchumanesociety.org, or call 903-962-5700.

Wednesday Study Club remembers assisination

Kathryn Strickland

The Wednesday Study Club held its monthly meeting Nov. 16 at the American National Bank in Canton. After a brief business meeting, Vice President Lisa Goode introduced Kathryn Strickland, who presented an interesting and informative program commemorating Nov. 22, 1963, the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Strickland was a student nurse at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. She was an eyewitness to many of the sad events of the day the fatally wounded President was rushed to Parkland. She and other student nurses watched in stunned disbelief from their residence hall across from Parkland’s emergency room. She recounted how the bustle and noise of the busy hospital became hushed and felt unreal as the realization of President Kennedy’s death unfolded. “Her personal reliving of this bleak moment in our country’s history brought back memories of where each person was when they heard that the President had been shot,” study club members said.

Shirley Attaways speaks to the Genealogical Society

VZC solider remembered in France

The old expression, “it’s a small world,” could apply to a chain of events that occurred involving the Van Zandt County Genealogy Library at the courthouse annex in Canton.

Benja Mize, query researcher at the genealogy library, received an e-mail in early October from Libby Sloan, a resident of Paris, France. Sloan was referred to Mize by another researcher, Betty Miller.

In the e-mail, Sloan explained that she was an American who has lived in France for 45 years and that her English neighbor has a nephew, Vincent Trotot, who lives near the American War Cemetery in Normandy.

Her nephew and his wife, Cindy, were responsible for putting flowers on three graves of American soldiers in the cemetery including the grave of Charles McAnally from Texas, who died at the age of 21 when his boat sank in June 1944.
