The Canton Eaglettes and Edgewood Lady Dogs met on the hardwood Nov. 20, wrapping up their respective pre-Thanksgiving schedule in a tightly contested game. The Eaglettes would ultimately prevail in the contest, hitting 15/18 free throws down the stretch for a 50-43 win.
Canton narrowly edged out Edgewood on the scoreboard in the first quarter, getting points from five different players to take a slim 11-10 lead.
Edgewood bounced back in the second quarter, outscoring Canton 15-13 in the frame to take a one-point lead into the half.
With every District 7-4A team officially eliminated from playoff contention, district coaches released their list of Superlative and All-District honorees for the 2018 season.
Not surprisingly Rusk, which started the season 0-6 before roaring their way through District 7-4A play with a perfect 4-0 record dominated Superlative selections by winning at least a share of all seven honors presented.
The Canton Eagles made their way Whitehouse on consecutive days last week, hitting the hardwood twice as part of the 22nd annual Jasper Ventures Tyler Area Basketball Officials Classic. Canton split their two games at the event, defeating TK Gorman Nov. 23 before falling to All Saints the following afternoon.
Canton made it look easy in their first game, getting at least 12 points from four different players en route to a 75-58 win over TK Gorman.
The Canton athletic program enjoyed a banner day Nov. 14 with three senior standouts, Simon Miller, Johnnie Krawietz and Blayne Clower, signing their letters of intent to compete in baseball collegiatelly. Miller signed with the University of Incarnate Word, Krawietz with Weatherford College and Clower with the University of Mary. A large contingent of family, friends, teammates and Canton coaches joined the trio during their signing ceremony to celebrate the big event.
The Justin Burk-era of Canton basketball got underway Nov. 13 as the Eagles hit the road to take on Mount Pleasant in non-district action. The Tigers provided a solid test for Canton, coming off a season in which they went 29-7 overall on their way to an appearance in the Class 5A Regional Semifinals.
Mount Pleasant set the pace early against the Eagles, jumping out to a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Canton Eagles got their first taste of District 7-4A action last week, hitting the road to take on the Brownsboro Bears. The Eagles and Bears had met each of the past two seasons in non-district play with Canton scoring a 56-34 win in 2016 and Brownsboro bouncing back with a 26-21 win in 2017.
Due to the most recent UIL redistricting shuffle, Canton and Brownsboro will be paired each of the next two seasons in district play. Despite a gritty effort from an injury-plagued Canton team, Brownsboro would pull away late to score a 62-41 win over the Eagles.
The Canton varsity boys cross country team placed third at the District 14-4A Meet, qualifying to race again at the Regional Cross Country Meet in Grand Prairie.

Varsity and junior varsity runners representing Athens, Brownsboro, Canton, Mabank, Van and Wills Point made their way to the First Monday parking grounds Oct. 9 to compete in this year’s District 14-4A Meet. Wills Point easily finished ahead of its county rivals at the event, winning first overall in the varsity boys, varsity girls, JV boys and JV girls divisions.
The varsity boys race was among the most competitive run at the District 14-4A Meet with less than 20 points separating the top four finishers. Wills Point came in first with 49 points, followed by Mabank with 61 points, Canton with 62, Brownsboro with 68, Athens with 98 and Van with 147.
The Canton Eaglettes tallied two more wins in District 14-4A play last week, strengthening their grip on a potential playoff position with just seven games left to play in the regular season.
The Eaglettes opened last week at home, playing host to the Brownsboro Bearettes Sept. 25. Canton and Brownsboro played twice in 2017 with each team earning a home court sweep over the other.
The Canton Eagles earned the bounceback win they needed last week, putting the missteps and defensive miscues they suffered in a surprising loss to Mabank far in the rearview with a 33-14 win over the visiting Quinlan Ford Panthers Sept. 28 at Norris Birdwell Stadium.
Prior to kickoff, Canton held its annual homecoming festivities including the introduction of this year’s court and the crowning of the 2018 CHS Homecoming Queen Katie Nava.
The Canton varsity boys team took home of Jonathan Bourquin, Matthew Hook, Garrett Stapleton, Trent McCarver, Wilson Null and Kevin Nixon won the team championship at the YWAM Invitational.
The Canton Running Eagles stayed close to home last week, running at the Van Youth With a Mission Invitational Sept. 29.
The varsity boys won the meet and Jonathan Bourquin won first place individually in a time of 17:31. Matthew Hook was third in 18:12, Garrett Stapleton sixth in 18:18, Trent McCarver 14th in 19:08, Wilson Null 15th in 19:13 and Kevin Nixon 16th in 19:17. In the JV boys division, Grant Bass finished third overall and Jax Wilkerson was 11th.
