CHS band concert tonight

Musicians fare well at region, area contest

The Canton High School band will present a winter concert at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at the CHS auditorium.

The band recently had 21 students make All-Region Band. They were:

Heather Adams, Emma Berry, Hannah Boswell, Michael Conrado, Jack Dyre, Samantha Ellis, Savannah Ellis, Matthew Hook, Ian Keele, Austin Lomas, John Macoy, J.B Medley, Erin Milligan, Breanna McGowan, Emily Nicks, Savanna Nowlin-Martinez, Lauren Pennington, Spencer Pennington, Sam Silver, Addi Turner and James Vogt.

Advancing to Area were Emma Berry, Jack Dyre, Samantha Ellis, Savannah Ellis, Matthew Hook, Austin Lomas, Ian Keele, John Macoy, J.B. Medley, Emily Nicks, Spencer Pennington and Sam Silver.

“Congratulations to these students,” said Band director Mike Bartley.

Dog days

Rising S K9 visited Canton Intermediate School third and fourth grade classes recently to introduce the students to their highly trained German Shepherds, Skibby  and Alf. The dogs demonstrated particular skills related to obedience, defense and tracking.

CHS academics earns sweepstakes at Whitehouse Thanksgiving Classic

The Canton High School Academic UIL Team had great success at the Whitehouse Invitational Meet in mid-November.

The students competed in the small school division against 20 1A to 4A schools and brought home the first place sweepstakes award.

“This was the first full academic meet of the year and the Academic Eagles are starting off strong!” UIL Coach Susie Dorman said. “Special recognition to the students who competed for the first time in any UIL event and placed!”

Individuals and teams achievements included:

Spelling – coached by Brittani Engebretson; first – Graysen Reid; second – Samantha Oakley; third – Ashley McDonald; sixth – Ally Wiley; first place team – Reid, Oakley, McDonald, Wiley

Literary Criticism – coached by Susie Dorman; first – Emily Nicks; second –        Maddie Lynch; third – Rainy Dare; first place team—Nicks, Lynch, Dare, Justine Lewis

Students hear of area history

Learning of the history of Van Zandt County from Elvis Allen were Canton Intermediate School teachers Diane Nipp and Becky Mayfield and students Hutson Davis, Ella Goodson, Caroline Kroha, Miguel Arce, Ruby Bringard, Pierce Fulton, Rylie Johnston, Mykah Mebane, Ford Robinson, Caroline Stern, Abbey Thelen, Erin Adams, Matthew Bartley, Emily Bitter, Gavin Cervantes, Norah Deleon, Canaan Eiland, Ethan Fisher, Abigail George, Nevan Heddin, Chad Lide, Aubree Logan, Beck Robinson, Emma Welty, Taylor Whitton and Maddie Wilson.

Canton Intermediate School GT students met with local historian Elvis Allen Oct. 27.

Allen gave the students a tour of the historical sites around the square and talked with them at length about the history of the community. 

The tour also included the Canton Plaza Museum and the Van Zandt County Library of Genealogy and Local History.

Operation drop off

Canton Elementary students made donations to Operation Christmas Child and the school’s November Student Council delivered the boxes to the local drop off point – Lakeside Baptist Church – last week. The CES students collected 50 boxes that will be sent to children in other parts of the world as Christmas gifts.
